A Letter From Dr. Carey
A Letter From Dr. Carey Mar 4, 2022
Dear Enumclaw School District Community,
Happy Reading
This week, many of our students participated in the annual celebration of Reading Across America. For those not acquainted with this event that has gone on for many years, it serves as a time to reinforce the importance of reading as a life skill needed by all, while creating opportunities for our students to listen to some of the favorite stories shared by staff throughout our learning community.
It was my great pleasure to be invited to Ms. Landry’s class at Black Diamond Elementary School, to share one of my favorite picture books with the students in her class. In addition to sharing the story, I also talked about how many people love to hear a great story and that they would be surprised by how much enjoyment their own family members would receive from hearing a story read to them by their child. With that “challenge” issued to the students in that class, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a number of families who were read great stories by their children that very evening!
Although this focus on reading “week” is in the rearview mirror, I encourage students (and families) to carve out a bit of time each week to share or listen to a story. Not only is it great modeling of a skill needed for a lifetime, but also a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our connections to one another. Happy reading!
Shaun
State Mask Mandate and DOH
In a press conference on Monday, Governor Inslee announced a change to the date the statewide indoor mask mandate will be lifted. Instead of March 21, the statewide mandate – including in schools – will be lifted at 11:59 pm on March 11.
This means that beginning Monday, March 14 masks will become optional in our school buildings. Staff and students will have the choice to wear a mask at school. Please know that we will support everyone in their decisions and respect everyone’s right to choose for themselves.
Masks will not be required on buses after March 11th.
DOH is preparing updated guidance for K–12 schools, and they intend to release the guidance as soon possible.

We wrapped up our celebration of CTE Month in February!
Career & Technical Education plays a huge role in readying students for careers and college. CTE month is a time to recognize the CTE community achievements and accomplishments. We have so much to celebrate in our Career & Technical Education programs at the High School and Middle Schools.
Did you know?
Career & Technical Education is made up of 6 program areas including Business & Marketing, STEM, Family & Consumer Sciences, Skilled & Technical Sciences, Health Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. Each program area reflects a grouping of career pathways that have one or more commonalities. Many students participate in CTE classes from a variety of program areas. This not only provides them with a wide range of skills but also creates opportunity to explore future career interests.
Enumclaw School District is hiring!

Voluntary COVID Testing Opportunities
The Voluntary PCR COVID Testing Program Has Returned for All Enumclaw School District Staff
In collaboration with the state Department of Health, our school district will continue to participate in a state-funded program for voluntary COVID-19 screening and testing that will help contain the virus, protect our communities, and keep students and teachers healthy and safe.
This testing protocol fits into our larger strategy to contain and control the virus. We have adapted our operational practices to allow for proper countermeasures. Each precaution we take is an added layer of protection, and when used together, dramatically decreases the risk.
Testing Opportunities for Students and Families
The King County COVID testing site located next to EMS will remain open and will continue to provide access to PCR COVID testing for students and the community. For additional information on the testing site or to make an appointment please visit the link below.
