Christ the King Sunday
November 20, 2016
Mass TONIGHT at 7:00PM
Greetings Everyone!
TODAY Sunday, 11/20, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King TONIGHT at our 7:00PM Mass in Linehan Chapel.
The Feast of Christ the King is a new addition to our liturgical calendar. Pope Pius XII added this feast in 1925. At the time the world was in between two world wars, starting to see the rise of communism and the development of a world economy.
The addition of the feast of Christ the King was advocated by Franciscans (a religious community started to help the poorest of the poor by St. Francis of Assisi). They hoped that such a feast would remind Christians of their call to live as Christ taught us - by finding strength through service and peace making. Placed at the end of our liturgical year, this feast invites us to look back and reflect on the stories and lessons we heard in the scripture readings throughout the year.
I also think it is appropriate that the Feast of Christ the King occurs at the start of the “Christmas shopping season”. While the world no longer focuses on the threat of communism, it is dealing with an even greater threat - commercialism. Commercialism has led people and nations to lose touch of who they truly are and how God desires us to live. Commercialism is at the heart of the world’s economic crisis. Today’s feast reminds us of our priorities during a time where our society goes commercially haywire.
As our liturgical year comes to an end, ask yourself: “how am I being called to use my gifts and talents to help build the Kingdom of God here on Earth?
Peace,
~ Jamie
