First Days at SMS
As I start my 1st year as a member of the SMS family, I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome everyone to the 2019-2020 school year. This year brings many new faces, both to our staff and certainly our students. I am proud, honored and extremely excited to serve as your Principal. Although my two assistants principals are also new, Mrs. Jamie Bailey and Mrs. Tina Peters and a new building secretary, Mrs. Kristy McKinley we are eager to learn and get to know everyone (see picture below).
One of our goals is to provide a nurturing environment that places an emphasis on the social, emotional, and intellectual needs of all students. We encourage, staff, parents, and community members to work together to create a school community that enhances the educational experience for all our students.
My hope is this newsletter will be a helpful resource to know all the impressive things that are happening here as well as keep everyone in the loop for upcoming events. I hope to send this information about once per week or as new information is available.
We know that parents play a critical role in their children’s success. The home/school partnership is the most important relationship that can be established and maintained for children and it begins with communication. Please don't hesitate to reach out to anyone at SMS to help with any question you may have.
I look forward to a great year!

A Few Red Drops : the Chicago Race Riots of 1919 by Claire Hartfield. On a hot day in July 1919, five black youths went swimming in Lake Michigan, unintentionally floating close to the "white" beach. An angry white man began throwing stones at the boys, striking and killing one. Racial conflict on the beach erupted into days of urban violence that shook the city of Chicago to its foundations. This mesmerizing narrative draws on contemporary accounts as it traces the roots of the explosion that had been building for decades in race relations, politics, business, and clashes of culture.
