If you are lucky enough to live in a state where it is cheap to buy car insurance, your state is likely to stay in that group. But the reverse is also true: If you live in an expensive car insurance state, you are probably going to be stuck with high rates for a long time unless you move.

That's because the factors that influence the costs to insure a car are slow to change, according to

“Most of the least expensive states don’t have as large metropolitan areas as the most expensive group. With less congestion comes fewer accidents and less risk for insurers,” says Penny Gusner, consumer analyst for

Some states also have more competitive insurance industries, which lowers rates.

To calculate the cost, looked at the 20 top-selling cars and six of the largest insurance providers. Rates are for full coverage for a single, 40-year-old male who commutes 12 miles to work each day.

Ten zip codes for each state were included for the 20 best-selling cars for maximum full coverage.
