From Dr. Melissa Williams-Scott
Back in the day, when I was first teaching, overhead projectors were considered “technology” and to get students engaged, either we handed them a vis-à-vis pen to work a problem for the class, or we provided students pre-typed notes with blanks and they filled in the blanks on their notes while I taught from the overhead. Some days I and my peers, wondered if we were really addressing student learning while attempting to engage our students. Because we knew that no matter what, student learning was the ultimate goal. Bill Hall states in his book, Powerful Guiding Coalitions, “Leading the three big ideas of a PLC are
- a focus on student learning,
- a collaborative culture and collective responsibility and
- a results orientation” (Pg. 41).
If we truly want students to learn, engagement is critical. Today we have many options to engage students using technology. Digital notebooks are one example. In the coming months we will provide examples of how to utilize Schoology to engage students and increase learning opportunities using formats that this generation uses comfortably.
