Peformers and Programs Webinar
Free webinar opportunity from the New York State Library. Please share.
Please join us for a FREE webinar on Friday, October 22 to learn all about the Performers and Programs database at https://www.performersandprograms.com/about This resource can be a very effective tool to assist with planning Summer Reading programs and other activities for the coming year!
Did you know there is a statewide resource provided by the New York State Library that lists over 400 different performers and presenters who offer over 1,700 in-person and virtual programs for library and school settings? These programs are specifically aimed at youth and students for activities like Summer Reading, literacy and education programs, and year-round reading and learning programs and activities.
The New York State Performers and Programs database is a searchable online resource that lists performer and program related information in a huge variety of categories like music, science, literature, history, performing arts, and many more. The resource features educational and entertaining programs along with presenter contact information, making it easy to find just the right program for your library or other educational organization or venue. All listings provide descriptions and pricing, as well as presenter contact information and links to their social media platforms so you can check out their offerings for yourself. Program presenters create an account in the database and update and maintain their own information, but all listings have been vetted by local Regional Coordinators before being added to the database.
And the Performers and Programs database is not limited to just those who reside in or present programs in NY state. A virtual category was added to the database in 2020, so now presenters from around the country can list their virtual offerings along with in-person programs. This means that libraries and schools have an even wider range of programs to choose from.
Attendees will learn how to navigate and effectively search the Performers and Programs database, as well as how to promote the resource to performers and presenters in their region or community. The webinar will be delivered by Peter Kowalski, database manager for Performers and Programs, with an introduction by Sharon Phillips, Youth Services Program Manager for the New York State Library. There will be time for questions and the webinar will be recorded.
We hope you can join us!

Free Newslit Webinars
Join the News Literacy Project for a webinar series designed to foster more productive conversations — free of misinformation — among friends and family members and across generations, particularly during the holidays. We will help you understand what misinformation is, how people come to believe it and how to effectively and compassionately communicate and debunk those beliefs. While older adults play a critical role in sorting fact from fiction and helping others to do so, we all can benefit from resources and support to help prevent harm from mis- and disinformation.

Understanding Misinformation and How to Talk to People Who Believe It
Sponsored by the Fore River Foundation
Session 1: The Misinformation Landscape
Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2-3 p.m. ET. Register here.*
In this session, we will discuss how to move beyond the unhelpful term “fake news” to more precisely identify the many types of misleading, inaccurate and false information that we encounter regularly. We will explore the motivations behind different propagators of misinformation and the many ways they use our emotions and cognitive biases to manipulate us into believing something is true. We will also demonstrate key fact-checking and verification skills for identifying misinformation.
* This session is being held in partnership with AARP’s OATS/Senior Planet program and hosted on AARP’s Virtual Community Center.
Session 2: Essential Fact-Checking Skills
Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2-3 p.m. ET. Register here.*
Join us for the second installment of this webinar series. Dive into the tools and skills needed to fact-check and verify the authenticity of information as well as how to source its origins for yourself.
* This session is being held in partnership with AARP’s OATS/Senior Planet program.
Session 3: Productive Conversations Without Confrontation
Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2-3 p.m. ET. Register here.*
The holiday season is a great time to enjoy a meal with family and friends and reflect on all that we are thankful for. Unfortunately, for many of us, our dinner table may include those who have deeply held but completely false beliefs. Once you have learned how to verify information, the next step is talking to someone whose beliefs are fueled by misinformation. We will focus on how to have this conversation in a productive, non-confrontational way in order to yield positive outcomes.
* This session is being held in partnership with AARP’s OATS/Senior Planet program.
