Luke Buchanan
Marketing and Operations Manager
Luke Buchanan was Double Major Student
In 2007, Luke Buchanan embarked on his professional path as a university student. Luke Buchanan was a double major student studying both environmental studies and communications and playing Men’s club lacrosse at Tulane University. In April of 2013, Luke Buchanan received his license to work as a real estate salesman and works in Washington D.C. He is an active sports player: he runs, skis, bikes, and plays tennis. Luke Buchanan regularly updates his blog at LukeBuchanan.com which features a number of articles he feels are important or relevant.
Luke Buchanan: Blogging
In June of 2013, Luke Buchanan joined the burgeoning ranks of bloggers by creating www.LukeBuchanan.com. “Blogs are useful,” the young real estate professional says.” You can reference things you see happening socially and give your own opinions and insight into what is happening.”
For a lot of people, that is one of the main attractions to keeping a personal blog. Luke Buchanan’s blog contains articles that he categorizes. “I categorize articles by news, pet adoptions, photos, politics, and Washington Sports,” describes Luke Buchanan. Needless to say, these are all subjects that are close to Luke Buchanan’s heart. As his blog grows, he says he may add more detailed categories to file things under.
“Even hardworking professionals have hobbies,” says Luke Buchanan. “Blogging is only one of the things I enjoy. People don’t seem to realize how active I really am.” When he is not updating his blog or working, Luke Buchanan can be found playing recreational sports. The sports Luke Buchanan likes best are running, tennis, and skiing.
When he was an undergrad student at Tulane University in New Orleans, Luke Buchanan worked hard as a double major. “I was interested in two areas of study and not wanting to pick between one or the other, decided to major in both knowing it meant an increased workload for myself,” says Luke Buchanan. His two areas of study were in environmental studies and communication. These are subjects that find their way into Luke Buchanan’s blog. “There are many industries in which a communications degree is useful, and I know it has helped start my career in real estate,” he says.
Luke Buchanan: Joining a Professional Organization
Luke Buchanan says joining a professional organization is a great way to advance your career. A Washington, D.C.-based real estate agent, Luke Buchanan is associated with a group of luxury real estate firms.
Luke Buchanan received his Washington, D.C. Real Estate Salesperson License in 2013, two years after graduating from Tulane University. But this accomplished young man also has a background in marketing. Luke Buchanan has been a member of the American Marketing Association since 2011. This organization has opened many doors for Luke Buchanan, providing him with a competitive edge in the marketing industry.
One reason Luke Buchanan recommends joining a professional organization is that it is a great way to network. When you attend organization meetings you are able to interact with a wide range of peers and colleagues at varying points in their careers and are working with a variety of countries. In today’s economy, jobs often open up only to those who already have connections. Luke Buchanan sees professional organization meetings as precisely the place where career advancement begins.
Another reason Luke Buchanan believes in joining professional organizations is that they offer opportunities for continuing his education. To truly hone your skills as a professional, Luke Buchanan believes you should attend as many continuing education programs as possible. Every class offers some new insight into the workings of your industry that can help you get ahead of your competitor. Having new and up-to-date credentials can also help you to advance within your industry.
Luke Buchanan: Why College Students Should Join a Fraternity
During his time at Tulane University, Luke Buchanan belonged to the Tau Upsilon chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Sigma Alpha Epsilon is one of the oldest fraternities at Tulane, having been founded in 1897. The national fraternity got its start in Alabama, way back in 1856, and today boasts more than 307,000 initiated members.
Luke Buchanan served as the President of the Tulane chapter’s 2007 Pledge Class. Luke Buchanan found that membership with a fraternity suited him well: it was a fun and fulfilling experience, and he encourages other young men to consider this option as they embark on their college careers.
One of the best reasons to join a fraternity, Luke Buchanan says, is social. It can serve as a smaller, more familiar community within the larger college or university. It is easy for first-year students to become overwhelmed by all the new people and experiences. Joining a fraternity allowed Luke Buchanan to make close connections with a group of young men who shared his values. Luke Buchanan says a fraternity affiliation is also useful for finding a mentor in the academic or professional world who can help you to navigate college and work life.
Luke Buchanan says there is a far more pragmatic reason for young men to join fraternities, and that is its network of alumni. Since graduating in 2011, Luke Buchanan has drawn on the brotherhood of Sigma Alpha Epsilon alumni for friendship and professional support. Luke Buchanan recommends always mentioning your fraternity affiliation in employment situations because of the camaraderie born of shared fraternity membership.
Luke Buchanan: Volunteering His Time
Luke Buchanan first began to volunteer in Washington, D.C., where he grew up. His earliest experience was working with the Spanish Education Development Center. The center provides daycare for underprivileged children. Education, and getting an early start, is an integral part of growing up, and Luke Buchanan wants to do whatever he can to make sure each and every person, regardless of their social standing, is able to take advantage of America’s great education system.
The desire to keep volunteering his time only grew as Luke Buchanan became older. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Luke Buchanan began working with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild its neighborhoods. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization dedicated to building simple, decent, and affordable housing. The experience with post-Katrina New Orleans may have helped spark Luke Buchanan’s interest in real estate.
Luke Buchanan knows that an education and a home are nothing if there is not a healthy planet to live on. This is why he spent time working with 350.org while he was in New Orleans going to school at Tulane University. 350.org is a global climate movement dedicated to lowering the planet’s carbon count to 350 parts per million.
Now that he’s living in Washington D.C. again, Luke Buchanan still volunteers his time.
When he is not working, Luke Buchanan likes to give his time volunteering for various organizations. Presently, Luke Buchanan is a volunteer photographer for PetFinder.com, a site to help good pets find good homes. Since animals are unable to help themselves, Luke Buchanan is happy to volunteer his time to help them. Luke Buchanan knows that volunteering time and even photography skills is the best way to give back. Volunteering, according to Luke Buchanan, is a great way to boost a resume and spend extra time.
Luke Buchanan on Making a Difference with Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building homes for people in need is a truly inspiring one, and a mission that Luke Buchanan connects strongly with. A Tulane graduate, Luke Buchanan volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in the months after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. While working with Habitat for Humanity, Luke Buchanan was struck by what a big difference the efforts of volunteers were making for the families and communities where they came to work. From utter destruction, homes rose again. Luke Buchanan worked and watched as New Orleans was slowly, if incompletely, renewed by volunteers from Habitat for Humanity and other organizations.
Habitat for Humanity has been building homes for people in need since 1976. Luke Buchanan is proud to be among the thousands of individuals who have worked with Habitat for Humanity and encourages everyone he meets to volunteer with the organization. Many college students have the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity during school breaks, notes Luke Buchanan, while others might find volunteer opportunities through their church community or other organization. For Luke Buchanan, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity stands alongside organizations like the Spanish Education Development Center as a critical forum for giving back to the communities he has called home.
Luke Buchanan often reflects on the lessons he learned while working with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. The bravery of those who had survived the storm was touching, and Luke Buchanan spoke with many survivors who told him about the horror of the storm and the subsequent losses. Inspired by these stories, Luke Buchanan, when facing an obstacle, draws on the strength that he believes he developed during this period. It seems impossible to Luke Buchanan that you could work with Habitat for Humanity, especially in a region like post-Katrina New Orleans, without being totally transformed.
Building a Community Through Blogging – Advice from Luke Buchanan
Luke Buchanan blogs about politics at www.LukeBuchanan.com, and he has found that blogging connects him to a diverse audience, some of whom become much more than passive recipients of his posts. In fact, Luke Buchanan has made a number of friends by blogging at www.LukeBuchanan.com. Luke Buchanan now makes a point of cultivating community among his readers, turning them into interlocutors. Blogging is a perfect platform for creating community in the digital age.
One of the most important tools Luke Buchanan has learned to embrace is the use of a call to action. The call to action goes at the end of blog posts and incites comments and feedback by asking a question related to the content of the post. These questions allow Luke Buchanan’s readers to share their own experiences. By putting his readers in conversation with his post and with each other, Luke Buchanan fosters dialogue and intimacy among the diverse group that reads www.LukeBuchanan.com.
Another way that Luke Buchanan fosters community through www.LukeBuchanan.com is by posting guest bloggers to the site. By asking frequent readers to contribute a piece of their own writing to the site, Luke Buchanan is able to build a more personal relationship with individual readers and writers whose thoughts he admires. Luke Buchanan also sometimes interviews these guest bloggers and shares those conversations with his readership.
Luke Buchanan is also interested in helping his readers build community with each other. When Luke Buchanan notices another writer participating in the comments on his posts, he will add their blogs to a blogroll. Blogrolls list other recommended reading and help to direct Luke Buchanan’s readers to other writers of interest, particularly ones who are in conversation with www.LukeBuchanan.com. This solidarity with other writers has helped to shift the conversations that take place to a wider network.
Luke Buchanan’s Favorite Ski Trails
Luke Buchanan has enjoyed skiing for many years and has skied on a wide variety of trails around the United States. Skiing is one of Luke Buchanan’s favorite sports, and like any avid skier, he has his favorite trails. Here Luke Buchanan offers up some of his favorite ski trails.
Snowbird, Utah: Great for skiers and snowboarders alike, Luke Buchanan highly recommends this great ski resort just outside of Salt Lake City. Snowbird’s trails are beautiful and the snow is bountiful – the area gets 600 inches of snow each year. Snowbird also borders another resort, Alta, which is also worth a visit by skiers. Luke Buchanan suggests Snowbird for experienced skiers who don’t mind a few crowds – Snowbird’s reputation precedes it and the lift lines can get long.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Jackson Hole’s reputation precedes it as a top skiing spot, but Luke Buchanan favors it for one particular ski run: the terrifying Corbet’s Couloir. Luke Buchanan describes this run as one of the scariest skiing locales in the United States, offering up a start that is a virtual straight drop over a cliff. Only the most experienced should attempt this run.
Black Hole, Vermont: Black Hole, located in Smuggler’s Notch, is one of Luke Buchanan’s favorite ski runs when he is looking for a challenge. This course is heavily spotted with trees, and navigating around them is a task only suited to those confident they won’t crash. While not as hard as Corbet’s Couloir, Luke Buchanan recommends this hill only to those with a few years on skis behind them.
Brighton and Solitude, Utah: Neighboring Snowbird, Luke Buchanan often drops by Brighton and Solitude when the lines at Snowbird grow wearying. Brighton and Solitude get the same fantastic snowfalls, but the slopes are less intense. Luke Buchanan recommends this resort for skiers of all levels, making it a perfect family vacation spot.
Packing for Your First Camping Trips – Tips from Luke Buchanan
Luke Buchanan is an avid camper and outdoorsman who has hiked many mountains and spent dozens of nights asleep under the stars. To really enjoy a camping trip, however, it is imperative that you pack the right tools. A camping trip can require a lot of equipment, but Luke Buchanan offers his expertise in this guide to packing for your first camping trip.
There are a number of absolute basics that you will need for your first camping trip, explains Luke Buchanan. In many cases, it can be wise to borrow some of these supplies from friends who also camp before you make the big investment. You’ll need a tent, extra stakes, a ground cloth, and a hammer to set up the basics of your sleeping space. Follow that up with a sleeping bag and likely also a sleeping pad or air mattress, says Luke Buchanan. Some people are fine sleeping straight on the ground in their sleeping bags, observes Luke Buchanan, but most prefer some cushion, even in the great outdoors.
Once you have the basics for shelter down, make sure your first aid kit is in order. This is probably the most important thing you will pack, according to Luke Buchanan. This kit should include several types of bandages, including roll bandages, tape, antiseptic wipes, a bee sting kit, splinting materials, and ace bandages. Hopefully you won’t need any of these things, says Luke Buchanan, but it’s important to camp safely.
The third critical category when packing for your camping trip is the cooking supplies, says Luke Buchanan. Make sure you have enough water packed for both drinking and cooking. You should also have a small pot, a fire starter, and non-perishable food items that don’t need much preparation. Be certain to include a can opener, says Luke Buchanan, as people often find themselves staring at a closed can.
Luke Buchanan on Why You Should Work with Animals
Among his many commitments, Luke Buchanan volunteers as a photographer for www.PetFinder.com. Photographing pets in need of a home is a really meaningful activity for Luke Buchanan, and he tries to commit some time every week to this work. Working with animals is an absolute pleasure and consistently leaves Luke Buchanan in a better mood and less stressed than when he arrived. The joy that volunteering with these animals has brought to Luke Buchanan is why he suggests that everyone look for an opportunity to work with animals.
One reason Luke Buchanan suggests that everyone try to find work that involves animals is that working with and being around animals actually reduces stress levels. People who live with pets have lower blood pressure and less anxiety than those without pets. Animals can even help keep depression at bay and boost immunity. With all of these health benefits, Luke Buchanan can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to work with animals.
Another reason Luke Buchanan recommends people seek out work with animals is that animals are, at least under most circumstances, incredibly loving. The animals Luke Buchanan works with at PetFinder events love the attention and are very affectionate. The love animals offer is a special sort. Luke Buchanan finds himself overwhelmed each week by the sheet amount of attention and love the animals shower upon him. If you are mindful and kind to the animals you work with, the returns can be immeasurable.
One final reason Luke Buchanan suggests working with animals is that the other people you work with are also animal lovers. There is a great love and enthusiasm that your fellow volunteers will exude because they truly care about doing what is best for these animals, and Luke Buchanan finds this attitude absolutely contagious. Whether it’s photographing animals like Luke Buchanan, or cleaning cages, or just playing fetch, working with animals is a true joy.
Joining a Professional Organization – Thoughts from Luke Buchanan
Joining a professional organization is a great way to advance your career, says Luke Buchanan, a real estate agent based out of Washington, D.C. Luke Buchanan is part of a group of a luxury real estate firms in Washington, D.C. and received his Washington, D.C. Real Estate Salesperson License in 2013, though he also has a background in marketing. Luke Buchanan has been a member of the American Marketing Association since 2011. This organization has provided Luke Buchanan with a competitive edge in the marketing industry by opening up a range of new opportunities for him to pursue.
One reason Luke Buchanan recommends joining a professional organization is that it is a great way to network. When you attend organization meetings you have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of individuals at varying points in their careers and working with a variety of countries. In today’s economy, jobs often open up only to those who already have connections. Luke Buchanan sees professional organization meetings as precisely the place where career advancement begins.
Another reason Luke Buchanan believes in joining professional organizations is that they provide opportunities for continuing education. To truly hone your skills as a professional, Luke Buchanan believes you should attend as many continuing education programs as possible. Every class offers some new insight into the workings of your industry that can help you get ahead of your competitor. Having the appropriate continuing education credentials can also help you to advance within your industry.
Luke Buchanan also sees joining a professional organization as a way to make friends with people whom you have something in common with. Being able to talk about work is a great icebreaker, Luke Buchanan finds. From there, it can be easy to build meaningful friendships that extend beyond the professional realm. Professional societies often offer social events for just this reason.
Luke Buchanan on the Benefits of Volunteering
Ever since high school, Luke Buchanan has volunteered for a range of organizations. One of Luke Buchanan’s earliest volunteer experiences was with the Spanish Education Development Center. This organization serves as a day care for underprivileged children in the Washington, D.C. area. This early volunteer experience taught Luke Buchanan about the benefits and joys of volunteering.
The biggest reason Luke Buchanan believes in the importance of volunteering is that there is no greater gift than the joy of helping others. When Luke Buchanan was volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, he was amazed by the transformation the group created. By helping to build and repair homes, says Luke Buchanan, he was able to see people infused with greater hope and spirit.
One personal benefit that Luke Buchanan sees in volunteering is that, especially for young people, it looks good on a resume. When applying to colleges, Luke Buchanan became aware that most colleges wanted to see well-rounded applicants whose extra-curricular activities included volunteer experiences. This is not to discount the benefits established professionals accrue from volunteering, such as honing leadership and communication skills. Luke Buchanan suggests seeking out organizations that do work related to your professional field, where you can build both experience and network connections.
Particularly in our current economic climate, Luke Buchanan recommends volunteering for any organization you feel does good work in the world. Many service organizations have very limited budgets and are facing continued cuts and so their ability to do good work is dependent on the involvement and contributions of community members. If you believe in the work a group is doing, says Luke Buchanan, find a way to directly lend a hand to support them. Even when organizations do have enough money for programming, they are often short-staffed and will greatly appreciate assistance in executing their events and ideas.

Luke Buchanan is an aspiring young professional in Washington, D.C. In the late summer of 2013, he obtained his official D.C. Real Estate Salesperson License for six months. He first received his license in April of 2013. Luke Buchanan enjoys working in real estate. It is a change from his first position in California where he worked for a marketing company.

Volunteer Photographer Luke Buchanan
Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. When someone says they are a volunteer, it says a lot about their character. People who willingly donate their time for the benefit of others are prized and appreciated. Luke Buchanan works as a volunteer now but has a history of volunteer work.
When Luke Buchanan was a high school student, he volunteered for the Spanish Education Development center. The center served as a day care for underprivileged children in Kalorma, Washington, D.C. His experience volunteering in high school encouraged him to volunteer for many years to come.
Luke Buchanan attended university in New Orleans. He was a double major student at Tulane University in New Orleans, and after Hurricane Katrina Luke Buchanan worked with Habitat for Humanity. Luke Buchanan saw for himself the rebuilding that still needed to be done. When he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in the post-Katrina years, he knew he was continuing to make a difference and help restore lives destroyed by the hurricane. Luke recounts, “it was a lot of hard-work, but well worth it after meeting with the future homeowners and seeing what a difference one can make in the lives of those in need.”
Luke Buchanan continues to work as a volunteer but instead of volunteering with an organization, his services are provided independently. As a photographer, Luke Buchanan loves to photograph nature and animals. Luke Buchanan became a volunteer photographer for the website petfinder.com, which he says is his favorite topic of photography. “My goal is to update their pictures for petfinder.com so that they can put their best paw foreword in their struggle to get adopted,” says Luke Buchanan. He photographs animals at pet adoptions and also for political events for HispanicLink.org.

He commented that the marketing experience gained in Santa Monica smoothed his transition into marketing and selling residential real estate in Washington. You cannot sell a house the same way you sell a lady a pair of shoes, there is a lot more planning involved.” Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, he figured he would return home and begin a new career where his skills and knowledge learned though both Tulane and Dentsu could be effectively applied.
