The Fairview Connection
AUGUST 26, 2022
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
Thank you to all parents and guardians who attended last evening’s Back-to-School Night! It was such a special evening as we were able to gather together to connect with one another and share all about the upcoming school year. Your attendance is such an encouragement to the Fairview staff, as it shows your commitment to partnering with us as we work together to help our students learn and grow. As shared at the whole group meeting to start out our evening together in the gym, we are excited to share that we will be implementing Falcons Read this school year as a way to foster a love of reading in our students through monthly reading related activities designed for both school and home. To kick off our Falcons Read initiative, we invite all Fairview families to Camp Fairview, a camp-themed literacy night where families can connect with one another while engaged in a variety of reading activities. Camp Fairview will take place on Thursday, September 15th from 6:00-7:30 pm at Fairview. Click on this link for more details!
Next week and continuing through September 9th, students will continue to be engaging in our fall assessments. We gather data from a variety of sources to help us best instruct our students throughout the school year. This past week, students took the MAP assessment (Measures of Academic Progress) on Wednesday and Friday for both reading and math. This assessment helps us to analyze student growth over time and helps teachers identify specific skills to target when instructing each child. Students will also take the CBM-Math CAP (Curriculum Based Measure – Math Concepts and Applications), which is a universal screening assessment that provides information on each student’s current math abilities. The CBM-Reading assessment will also be administered next week to measure students’ reading fluency, which is an excellent predictor of overall reading success. Lastly, the Fountas & Pinnell running record assessment provides teachers with good information about students’ fluency and reading comprehension. All of this data is valuable to us in determining what concepts to focus on with each child and where extra support may be needed to close any achievement gaps. Student reports from the MAP assessment will be sent home later this fall. We provide information to parents about the MAP assessment, because it is a comprehensive measure of math and reading ability and shows student growth over time. If you would like further information regarding how your child scored on any of these other measures, please email your child’s teacher to inquire. Any of this information can be made available to you if you’d like it.
Next week we will also be having a safety week at Fairview. Students will practice all emergency procedures so they know what to do if we ever experience an emergency at school. We will practice our evacuation, shelter-in-place, hard lock down and bus evacuation procedures on different days throughout the week. If you would prefer that your child does not participate in the hard lock down drill, please email me (dophus@d57.org) and we can make alternate arrangements for your child during that time. Hopefully we will never need to enact these procedures, but it is good to be well prepared just in case. Knowing this is happening at school, it is a good reminder to talk to your children about what you would do if there was ever an emergency in the home as well.
As Dr. Gorr shared in her parent communication last week, families will no longer be notified of each positive COVID case within the building. The District will continue to update a dashboard to keep families informed. This information can be found on the District’s website under Families and Health Information. The dashboard reflects all positive cases of staff members and students who were present in a District 57 building during the period that they were infectious. The numbers do not account for those who have COVID and were not in the buildings when infectious. Also, as shared in last week’s Fairview newsletter, we are excited to share that our 5th grade students will be taking a field trip early this school year on Monday, September 19th to Sunrise Lake Recreation Center (click here for more information about Sunrise Lake). We hope to make this an annual trip for our 5th graders assuming the trip is well received by our students and staff. The purpose of the trip is to provide our students with an outdoor education experience where they are also able to build community and connectedness as they head into their final year at Fairview. In order to make this happen, we will need parent volunteers to help lead stations and activities for our students while teachers participate with and manage their classes through each station. The time commitment to serve as a volunteer involves attending a training on September 12th at Sunrise Lake from 9:30 am-noon and then attending the trip on September 19th from 9:00 am-2:30 pm. Parents will supply their own transportation to the training and will take the bus for the actual trip. Please fill out this form by Wednesday, August 31st if you are interested in volunteering. If we have more volunteers than we need to hold the trip, we will hold a lottery to select parents to participate. Thank you for considering!
Thank you for taking the time to read today’s newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend ahead and we look forward to seeing our students again on Monday!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus

STUDENT SAFETY
We have many students who ride their bikes to school. Bike riders should always observe bike safety rules. Bike riding is not allowed in the bus turnaround at any time during the school day.
It is the intent of the school, and District 57, to provide a safe and healthy environment for children.
We are asking that you please not bring your dog/pet on school property for the safety of all our children. We have students who are afraid of dogs or are allergic.
REMINDERS FOR DROP-OFF/PICK-UP ZONE IN THE NORTH PARKING LOT
1. Please pull forward as much as possible. The goal is to have 3-4 vehicles at a time drop off or pick up.
2. Please have children exit the vehicle only in the designated area and on the passenger side.
3. Please have your children ready to exit when you pull up. If you are in the midst of a conversation please park in the lot and finish, and then walk your child or pull around to the back of the line.
4. Please be patient and plan your time accordingly. Students enter the building at the 8:45 a.m. bell and classes begin at the 8:50 a.m. bell.
5. Please be aware that there are many vehicles behind you and everyone is in a hurry. Your consideration is appreciated.
6. Please refrain from using your cell phone in the parking lot or around the building. Remember that Illinois State Law prohibits cell phone use in school zones and this includes the parking lot when picking up and dropping off.
7. Thank you for your help in making this a very safe and efficient area for your children.

BUS BULLETIN
Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.
