Spirit Week April 27-May 1
On Monday, please feel free to email me your stories! I would love to hear them! You could also visit the YouTube Channel - "Stories by Heart" (listed below) to get some inspiration!! sterners@kmsd.edu
I DO hope, however, that you did participate in last week's Safety Spirit Week. All of those items are important for ALL learners and families!
Apart Together
As we continue to grow our understanding and capacity of what At Home Learning looks and feels like, we also know that learners have strong connections with their classroom teacher and other staff members. This past week all of our classrooms had 1:1 meetings with their learners and GoogleMeet times with their entire class. We have the classroom meetings on our shared Magee Calendar so that if other staff members are available to join a classroom meeting they can.
We do hope you and your child found the 1:1 meetings a way to reconnect with your child's teacher, joyful, and valuable.
We also know that this is a new way of connecting with each other and that while adults have been having conversations and meetings using Zoom, GoogleMeet, etc - our learners might not feel comfortable with that yet. After all, there is a bit of time before becoming comfortable with talking into a screen. Thank you for all of the help and support you are giving your learners as we help them get used to communicating in this way.
We appreciate you!
Art, Music and PE At Home Learning
At Home Learning
At Magee, we have been working on building learner independence across our building in developmental ways. All of our learners are different, and their independence can look different in different subjects. Students have heard and used the language of "Waiting at the Station", "Chugging Along", and "Full Steam Ahead" across our building. The picture below is gives more context around what each of the descriptors might look like in a classroom.
These descriptors might be helpful when talking with your child about the work he/she is doing at home. HERE is the continuum linked on our website, with a blank page that can be printed for use at home.
As your learner is working at home, he/she should be able to be "Chugging Along" and/or "Full Steam Ahead" after instruction from their teacher. If your child is "Waiting at the Station", your guidance might be needed to help your learner know what HE/SHE can do to move to "Chugging Along". Asking, "What do you think you can do?" or "What do you need to help you complete the assignment or work out the math problem?" It might mean your learner needs to re-watch a video posted by the teacher - not all learners get it the first or second time they hear something; or going back to the Math Chat or Learning Lab in Zearn and watching/participating in it again.
Please remember to check your Art, Music and Phy Ed Seesaw classes for activities to complete sometime during the week.
Guidance will post a new activity every two weeks. There will not be a new Guidance activity this week.
Exciting Coding News! Here are the district coding resources to continue learning while at home! Go to the KM Makerspace Home Coding site to see all of the possibilities! Included on this site is a survey to submit the work you have done. We will be showcasing student work on the site so check back often!
Please know that we do NOT expect student work to be perfect when it is submitted. In fact, we actually ask that your child submit the work he/she did on their own. It gives the classroom teacher a better picture of what your child is actually doing. For example, if your learner left school not proficiently using punctuation/capitalization and now the work being submitted is all spelled correctly and perfectly punctuated it does not give an accurate picture of student work. We appreciate the additional instruction or coaching you are giving your learners, their application of the teaching and coaching is what we are looking for! Please continue to reach out with questions or for support. We are here for you and together we will get through this!
SHHHHH....Teacher Appreciation Week is next week!
Hello Magee Families!
I hope everyone is staying healthy during this time. Teacher Appreciation week is coming up the week of May 4th through the 8th. I am sure kids are missing their teachers very much, I know mine are! Even my high schooler is missing school, he says his teacher now is so strict. Ha!
We had many ideas of how to thank our staff and teachers among this crazy time. The decision has been to keep our thanks, virtual.
I am asking families if they could please send me a photo of their child/children either saying thank you by coloring/writing on paper. Then take a picture of them holding it. You could also take a picture of your child learning at home, maybe working on their favorite subject. Also families if we could include thank you’s to our para staff and guidance. Everyone at Magee plays such an important roll in your child/children's development and I want to make sure we thank them. After I receive all the pictures I will put together thank you Collage’s for everyone and send them to them. After the teachers view them I am sure Mrs. Sterner could post them on the Magee website for families to view. I will also be making up snack baskets and bringing them to teachers/staff for them to enjoy during their down times at home.
If there are any questions please send me a message. Otherwise if you could send your pictures to my email which is everestt2008@yahoo.com.
Thank you!
Cyndi Patrick

From The Health Room
We hope you and your families are staying safe during this outbreak of respiratory disease caused by COVID -19 across the world. It's important to remain supportive of each other, and realize that all individuals can minimize the chances of spreading coronavirus by washing hands often, staying home when sick, and covering any coughing or sneezing with a tissue. The CDC does recommend wearing a mask or face covering in a public setting as many people do not know they have the disease; the mask protects people from becoming exposed to COVID -19 as the virus can linger in the air longer than they originally thought. Please remember that KM outdoor facilities as well as playgrounds are closed and not available for use during this time as an additional means of stopping the spread of the virus. Anyone who becomes sick with symptoms more severe than an ordinary cold is advised to seek medical care. Please know that our Health Services Webpage has information you may find helpful and that KM is here to support you! Children, like adults, may not understand what is going on around us. What is COVID-19? Why are we home from school? Can I do anything to help? What's going to happen next? COVID 19 Book for Children is a great resource to help children understand COVID-19. It is a free, downloadable book geared for children ages 5-9 years recently written and released from London, UK. Hopefully by sharing this book with your children, they may begin to comprehend what is happening in their world around them. Wishing you healthy days ahead as we are hopefully on the road to recovery in our communities. Please inform the Health Room staff via email if your child has been exposed to or have been tested for COVID-19 as we continue to track illnesses in our community. We are here to help. Take care, and wash your hands! Jenny Pick, RN Magee/KMMS pickjennifer@kmsd.edu Regina Cowell, Health Assistant cowellr@kmsd.edu Patricia Schuetz, RN District Nurse schuetzp@kmsd.edu
Lunch For ALL Families
There have been some additional questions regarding KMSD Lunches - FREE lunches are available for ALL CHILDREN 18 and UNDER in a household.
Thank you for your cooperation with this!
If you have questions, please email KMSD Director of Nutrition Services, Joe Claas at claasj@kmsd.edu.
Student KMSD Email Accounts
A reminder that student email accounts should be used for KMSD educational purposes only. They should not be used to sign up for other social media or online activities such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Although most of our students are too young for the requirements of these platforms, it does happen. If you wish to sign your child up, you would need to create a different email account not associated with KMSD. Please let me know if you have any questions.
