BBES Counselor's Corner & SEL Second Step
The Second Step program is being used in your child’s classroom during morning meetings. This program teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe, respectful place where everyone can learn.
During the month of October, counselors will begin using the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit during Classroom Guidance. This consists of 5 bullying prevention lessons. During these lessons, students will learn specific skills to help identify and stop bullying. Students will learn how to:
Recognize when bullying is happening
Report bullying to a caring adult
Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
Be an Upstander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying
For bullying prevention to work, everyone needs to be involved. All staff receive yearly bullying prevention training. We need your help too! We encourage you to view the Second Step Bullying Prevention materials by visiting SecondStep.org. Please see the activation code in the attached letter.
Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the Bullying Prevention Unit.

Loudoun Education Alliance of Families (LEAF) Update:
The Loudoun Education Alliance of Families (LEAF) is an advisory group voice for parents to elevate educational concerns and provide feedback to the School Board on current or proposed policies or issues facing the School Board. Since the committee is composed of parents, members have a unique understanding of their children’s experiences and can offer insights about proposed policies, strategies and educational needs.
The LEAF committee members communicate School Board questions, recommendations, or decisions back to their communities; serve as an advisory body, bringing to the School Board’s attention existing or emerging issues expressed by parents in their school community and help develop and shape recommendations on improving student experience in schools. The committee meets monthly during the school year.
One of the main activities we are working on right now is policy feedback. This school year there are 103 policies that are scheduled for review. Policies are up for review every 5 years.
The public is invited to share feedback by visiting www.lcps.org/policyreview.
There are ten policies up for review now due October 4 and October 11, 2022:
- 4160 - Capital Improvement Program
- 6510 - Naming School Facilities
- 6130 - Unpaid Meal Debt
- 6140 - Free and Reduced-Price Meal Services
- 4115 - School Activity Funds
- 4145 - Petty Cash funds
- 5055 - Sexually Explicit Instructional Materials
- 7312 - Evaluation of Licensed, Classified and Administrative Staff
- 7564 - Dress Code for Staff
- 7720 - Leave Associated with Legal Proceedings
Please let us know if you have any input or visit www.lcps.org/policyreview to submit your feedback. Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that feedback will be included in the final policy. All feedback will be reviewed by the School Board Committee as they develop policies for submission to the entire School Board. The authority for final approval of any policy lies solely with the Loudoun County School Board.
If you would like any more information about the activities of the LEAF committee or have any questions or concerns, please contact Vivi Cassella or Setareh Deljo-Roland at BBESLEAF@gmail.com.
