The beginning...
As President of TLRC I discussed with our members our thoughts about creating a community of readers. We hosted Angela Duran from the Arkansas Campaign for Grade Level Reading. She explained the initiative to get all Arkansas third grade students reading on grade level by 2020. Our council also decided to create reading packets to be distributed through the Garland County Health Department. These packets contained picture books, infographics, and articles about the importance of reading to children of all ages.
Dr. Hernandez talked to the six other superintendents in Garland County about the initiative to get all of the schools on board in this enormous project. We then created a committee with representatives from all of the seven school districts. The committee created five focus areas.
