Falco Newsletter Oct. 4 - Oct. 17th
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy October Falcon Families!
I love this time of year when the weather starts to get a little colder and the leaves change colors. I’ve been excited to get to walk around and see students in classrooms engaging in learning together about maps, types of literature, fitness, goal setting, and even going on some walks into nature to practice their science skills.
We know for many of you this last two weeks has been a time of high anxiety. Reports of positive Covid cases are never fun to hear. This was our first go around with positive cases at Five Oaks and we learned a lot! We have streamlined our quarantine process so that if this happens again in the future, our response can be more efficient. One thing to note is that we learned that students on bus 164 can return to school on October 4th instead of October 5th like originally reported. With all the cases, wires were crossed. I apologize for the inconvenience. We’ve been talking a lot to students and would appreciate your help with the following reminders:
Students need to wear their masks correctly all the time! This means over their nose and chin and with a proper fit. We have disposable masks here on campus that students can have. I’ve seen a few students' masks slip down because they are too big. Please check this prior to sending students to school.
Wash masks! Some of our students seem to be wearing the same masks over and over again. They need to be washed daily or swapped out with a clean mask!
Bring a water bottle! We ordered disposable water bottles, but this is not a sustainable practice for us moving forward. Once the bottles of water are gone we will move to handing students cups to use in the water bottle filler.
Please don’t share at lunch! Please remind students that sharing is not caring during Covid! We want to keep everyone safe, so food brought from home or received from the cafeteria needs to be kept to oneself.
Water only in classrooms! Our classroom spaces are not for eating - this includes candy and gum.
Remember social distancing! Please help students remember that as much as we want to be close, social distancing is a powerful tool to help stop the spread of this virus!
We are looking at instituting seating charts at lunch to ensure contact tracing is more efficient. We know students interact outside during lunch, it will help tremendously to have an accurate record of who they are sitting with at lunch time. After talking with some students, they are not excited about a seating chart but understand why we may have to institute it.
Conferences are coming up! This year they will be student led and virtual (over zoom)! Look for an email from your child’s advisory teacher. !
Next week you will also receive information about our upcoming school fundraiser! We’re excited to raise some funds for our student body account. This account goes directly to providing activities and resources for students!
I have received some parent questions of the last week and would like to answer them here to help clear up any confusion.
Vacations and non-school sponsored athletic events are considered unexcused absences. Excused absences fall into one of the following categories:
Illness
Medical Appointments
Religious Holidays
Mental Health
Family Emergency
Funeral
Due to Covid protocols, we can’t have students bring food to share with others, even for special occasions.
We are working with transportation on the new QR plan. We will keep you updated on any changes. At this time, students who cannot scan the QR code on the bus are supposed to have a paper to bring home so they can fill out a survey about where they sat on the bus.
Quarantining busses happens when we cannot definitively see who students were exposed to on a bus. Due to this, like other BSD middle schools, we quarantined entire busses of students. In this environment, erring on the side of safety is our best option.
When students are in quarantine or absent for any reason, Canvas is the best way to access work for school. If you are experiencing issues with Canvas, please let us know!
We are excited about all of the learning opportunities this month - especially as we learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month in advisory Please remember October 8th, 14th, and 15th are non school days for middle school students! October 8th is a staff development day and the 14th and 15th are non school days due to conferences. Please reach out with any questions or concerns kelly_laverne@beaverton.k12.or.us
Comuníquese con cualquier pregunta o inquietud kelly_laverne@beaverton.k12.or.us

Words From FIve Oaks Library
By the end of this week, Language Arts students received a lesson in library catalogs. Destiny Discover is what we use to see what books are in the library and what books are checked out. Checked-out books can be placed on hold so students don’t miss out on their must-reads.
Students also learned how to log-in to their library accounts to see current checkouts, overdues, and fines. If books are listed under “fines”, make sure those books are found and get turned in soon! If the books truly are lost, make sure you contact the school the book belongs to in order to take the fine off of the student account. If you have any questions, email andee_zomerman@beaverton.k12.or.us
Happy Reading!
A fun project from Ms. Peterson's 6 & 7th grade S.S. classes
Repeat, repeat, repeat! Practice, practice, practice. 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classes have worked to draw freehand maps of the world. One of Petey's students got very creative with the instructions we have been stressing.
TAG NOMINATION PROCESS
Nomination forms are available on the TAG Website.
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked here. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to your child’s teacher.
Estimados Padres:
