McKay High Weekly Newsletter

Week of January 9 -- 13

Message from the Admin Team

¡Bienvenidos! As we move into week 2 after Winter Break, we’re excited to share some of the great events to continue to take place. There have been many athletic events, concerts, and great work done to improve our community and connection by students and staff at McKay. As we continue to prioritize learning, we are making significant efforts to clear hallways once classes have started. This isn’t new, we’ve been doing this all year. Now, we have students who regularly do not attend their classes or who are regularly late to class. We will be supporting them to focus and prioritize learning by moving them to the Scot Center for the class period. Our goal is to help them understand the importance of being to class on time and regularly. Thank you for supporting us by reinforcing this expectation at home.

Shout Outs (Academic, Athletics, Activities)

McKay Girls Wrestling traveled to Washington this past weekend to compete in the largest girls wrestling tournament in the country. We had two placers and placed 5th overall out of 96 schools from the United State and Canada. McKay Boys Wrestling also traveled last weekend. At Cleveland High School the boys brought home 7 medals and placed 5th overall out of 20 schools.

Patricia Mike was awarded the Statesman Journal’s Athlete of the Week. Mike won the newspaper's poll for top area athletes, which is voted on by readers. In three games at the Nike Interstate Shootout, she averaged 20 points and nine rebounds per game for the Royal Scots.

At last week’s swim versus Lebanon, every single McKay swimmer swam a personal best time. Each record was seconds faster than their previous time, which is a large improvement in swimming. Kudos to Coach Zielinski and Coach Piper for their tremendous work with our students.

Girls and Boys Basketball played some tough games at South Albany High School. Our students gave their all and played with heart. The girls battled the top ranked team in the state.

Safety Updates

Hallway Clean-up

This upcoming week your student may notice an emphasis around the school on clearing the halls, and getting students to class. Starting on Monday January 9, any student that is found in the halls 30 minutes after the start of the period will be escorted to the Scot Center for the remainder of said period. If a student has a "hall pass," or other official pass they will not have any issue. This is an effort to get students out of the halls and in to their classrooms.

While masks are not required, we continue to offer them for those who are interested in wearing them while on campus. They are available at our entrances throughout the building.
