BUCK NATION!

Thank you for sending your incredible children to Greene! We have had an incredibly positive start to the year. As the honey moon wears off, please keep in mind that transitions at any age are hard, but they can be made easier with support. Here are some ideas from Miracle Education and Recreation that can help a child of any age adjust more easily to the school year and environment.

1. Allow Your Child and Yourself to Experience the Stress

This particular step seems counterintuitive, but acknowledging the stress that both you as a parent and your children are experiencing makes it that much easier to move beyond it. This is an excellent opportunity for you to sit and talk with your child about what is bothering them, what their fears are and what can be done to help them feel better about the new surroundings and circumstances.

2. Cut Your Child Some Slack

Children in new educational settings are already overwhelmed with new schedules and teachers, so they do not need extra pressure to perform at home. Lessen your children’s load when it comes to unnecessary work, especially during the first few weeks of a new transition.

3. Talk to Teachers About Your Concerns

Almost no one will understand how much stress you and your child are going through more than your child’s teacher. Discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher, and ask for feedback. You are likely to discover that your teacher has resources to help you help your child. After all, they’ve likely helped out numerous other children who have made a big move before!

4. Talk to Fellow Parents

By joining the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), you can talk to other parents who may be in the same boat as you are. Having people who understand exactly what you are going through can provide support, and can even help your child find other children who are new to the school.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Moving to a new school is a stressful time, and your child may be struggling to get the sleep they need. Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. It's common for teenagers to start going to bed and waking up later. Simple habits can help teenagers get the sleep they need for health and wellbeing. Adequate sleep will help your child cope with anxiety in a healthy way and process new experiences.

To help your child get the sleep they need, limit screen time before bed, follow a bedtime routine and keep them from doing anything too exciting before bed. Make sure they get at least 60 minutes of exercise per day and try to prevent caffeine consumption. Lastly, make sure their bedroom is cool, dark and quiet. It’s best to get into a school sleep routine a week or two before school starts.

NGMS Families!

Thank you for another great week. Thank you for entrusting your children to us as we enter into week three of the school year. As we enter week three, we are finishing baseline/beginning of the year testing. Please make sure that your children are getting enough rest and are reading at least 15 minutes a night. Reading each night will help build stamina and help build literacy skills.

Please reiterate the importance of getting to class on time and being ready to learn. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support and help in any way.

Have a great week!!!

Hi NGMS Families,

Just a reminder that your child always has homework even if it is to read. Every student at Greene should be reading for 30 minutes or more daily at home and completing a Reading Log for his/her ELA/Social Studies teacher.

For every 15 mins of reading, your child will receive 1 step in his/her English and Social Studies class. The district-wide expectation is that every student receives a minimum of 4 steps a day to be on target for reading practice by reading for 30 mins at school and 30 mins at home. Working together, home and school, we can build a community of readers! Let's Go BUCK Nation!

This year at Greene, every Tuesday and Thursday for 30 minutes, students participate in Advisory. Various teachers serve as Advisors and guide students through a series of activities designed to promote academic success, college and career readiness, and social/emotional development.

A key component of Advisory is the creation and implementation of the Individual Learning Plan (ILP). All Rhode Island students in grades 6-12 are required to have an ILP, to plan, monitor, and support their learning opportunities and goals.

Providence students use Naviance as a platform to design and house their ILPs. Each month students have at least one or two ILP activities in Naviance they must complete to fulfill their grade level requirements. Students access Naviance through their Clever portal, and Advisors lead them in their required lessons and tasks. If lessons or tasks remain incomplete, students are expected to complete them by the end of that month.

We encourage families to familiarize themselves with students' Naviance profiles and activities. It is an excellent tool for exploring strengths, interests, and post-secondary opportunities. If you have questions regarding your student's specific Naviance lessons and tasks, please reach out to their Advisor. For information about the ILP or Naviance in general, please contact ILP coordinator, Carissa Jandrositz at carissa.jandrositz@ppsd.org or 401-456-9319.

Reminder- We don't have school Tuesday. Don't forget to Vote! Kids are curious about voting. Feel free to share with them where and how you vote and why. This is a great opportunity to share with them more about the world in which they live.

Coming your way:

  • 9/20 Parent Teacher Organization will meet 4:00pm in the cafeteria. Things on the Agenda:
  • What's going on at Greene

  • How to Volunteer

  • Planning Fall Festival

  • We will have light refreshments.

Next week: 9/19-9/23-

That afternoon, you will have two hours to meet your children's teachers and tour the school and their classrooms and ask questions as needed.

SAFETY:

In the mornings, if you are dropping your child off via car on Garfield Ave, please refrain from making a 3 point turn. Instead, continue to drive down Garfield and take a right onto Higgins Street. There is heavy bus traffic on Garfield and the street is narrow.

From Nurse Erin...

Thank you to all our Buck Families for making a great start to a new school year!

Nurse Erin's goals are to keep your children well and safe while they are here learning.

  • PLEASE encourage a BEDTIME routine for your child: Means turning off electronics 1 hr before bed. Set an alarm to wake up calmly and on time.
  • BREAKFAST!!! Even if a warm cup of tea or lemon water in morning with a piece of fruit or toast, a little goes a long way in the morning.
  • Bring WATER BOTTLES to school to fill up throughout the day. WATER is crucial to preventing headaches, frustration, fatigue, and stomach issues. Water, healthy snacks and meals, and good rest will keep your students coming to school and able to participate while feeling their best.

Nurse Erin is ALWAYS willing to talk with families:

  • Erin.obrien@ppsd.org is my email and I communicate well with a lot of families using KINVO, so please feel free to reach out any time you need to run something by me.
  • REMEMBER: CALL or EMAIL the school if your child is out ill or for other reasons, ATTENDANCE is crucial to students success. We want to help however we can!
