Student Spotlight: Kalyn Spencer (standing in the middle of the back row)
Kalyn Spencer is a happy third grade girl who bounces when she walks and beams with a gorgeous smile from ear-to-ear when she talks. And, Kalyn loves to dance. So much so, in fact, she and her team delighted the judges at a the I Love Dance competition in Plano last month taking home first place!
Kalyn started dancing at 8 years old and wants to continue for a long time. She takes lessons from Ms. Erin with Strive Studios. There are seven girls on her dance team who are in different grades and have varying levels of experience.
Kalyn has attended LPS since the first grade. Picking a favorite teacher since then is an impossible task – she says she loves them all. Her favorite subject is math, and she is currently learning about “area.” When asked what her favorite thing about LPS is, Kayln exclaimed, “It’s fun!”
Kalyn, who has a 10 week old puppy, wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She especially likes sharks and enjoys visiting the shark tank at the aquarium. “It’s really cool when they feed the sharks,” says Kalyn.
Kalyn loves to play basketball and says it helps her with dance because she builds strong muscles when she runs. Pepperoni pizza and red gummy bears are her favorite foods. She enjoys reading Dork Diaries and watching her iPad. She’s looking forward to going to aunt’s baby shower this summer (she’s having a girl!).
Justin Bieber is her inspiration, and “Nervous” is her favorite song. Kalyn is very excited to see him in concert soon with her big sister, who is 13.
Kalyn shows her leadership by “serving as a good example for the younger kids at LPS.” Kalyn will play this role well as an upper-classman fourth grader on our elementary campus next year.

AV/TECH Students Get Thrifty to Create Stylish, Professional Looks on a Budget at at Grace Bridge Resale
Students from Principles of AV Tech, Art & Communication, a class for 8th – 11th grades, recently created advertising blogs and images for Grace Bridge Resale, a local thrift store that sells new and gently used items to raise money to provide food, clothing, eye care, furniture, and job assistance to people in need in our community. The students worked in teams during this project-based learning assignment to increase awareness of the resources provided by Grace Bridge Resale. Through this process, the students learned about creating designer looks on a budget, recycling / repurposing, learning advertising skills, refining video editing techniques, and understanding the business and marketing side of fashion.
Students were given a goal of creating four outfits for under $35 each. They searched first for inspiration to find the look they hoped to create when shopping at Grace Bridge Resale. Then they assembled the outfits and created a blog which included photos of their thrift store finds as well as a short video advertisement. The students decided on the hashtag #savemoneysavelives to make it easier for the five classes to share cohesive content.
LPS students continue growing their service mindset and produce their work with excellence under the care of our outstanding teachers, such as Ms. Aguilar. Habit Helpers at Home
Habit Helpers at Home: The Maturity Continuum
Transformation and growth in a person begins within. We see through different philosophies and structures, including the structure of the 7 Habits, that going within and dealing with our own person first is the most important step to becoming better people. At LPS we chose to follow and teach through the 7 Habits as an effective tool for developing great leaders. We provide our students with the resources they need to develop strength, flexibility, and resilience. We hope that through these skills they are able to create better environments for themselves and the people they influence.
In the Maturity Continuum shown in this article, the habits are presented as a cycle. The cycle begins with a private victory. Think about your own life and the things that you are trying to accomplish. For example, maybe you want to improve your lifestyle by exercising and eating a healthy diet. Effective change involves first evaluating and understanding your current lifestyle so that you know what changes need to be made. What are some things you are currently doing and how are they affecting your life? Begin with the end in mind and set a measurable goal by a certain date. Be proactive and put your plan into action. Hold yourself accountable and encourage yourself to keep going, even when things get difficult. When you achieve your goal, you will accomplish the private victory. You can continue to grow in maturity as you move from dependence to interdependence on the Maturity Continuum.
As a family, we encourage you to take a look within. Observe the flow of the family, the habits that you have formed, and the effect that it’s taking in your lifestyle. Observe your life without judgment and look for areas of improvement. Decide what you want to achieve. Perhaps you want to grow closer and stronger as a family. Put first things first and decide to create an open environment with free and respectful communication between everyone. Decide to have dinner together every night, and check in regularly on your kids. Most importantly, decide to take care of yourself in order to cultivate a better environment around you. The better you feel, the more you will contribute to the strengthening of your family.
