OPTIONS BASED TRAINING/DRILL NEXT WEEK FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS
Earlier this week you received a district communication regarding Options Based training.
The Walled Lake Consolidated School District utilizes an “Options Based” approach to school emergency/lockdown scenarios. Within this training, students and staff have the options to run, hide, fight (age appropriately) in the event that there is an active threat in the building.
Walled Lake Central High School students and staff made use of their training during the false alarm the school faced this week. Most staff and students stayed in their classrooms, barricaded the doors, remained quiet, and allowed for the police and the administration to assess, evaluate, and investigate the alleged threat. A small number of WL Central students ran out of the building as that was their choice within their training.
We are thankful that there was no credible threat and that our students and staff were never in any danger.
Next week, each of our schools will have one day where building staff will be trained in Options Based emergency response. In order to make this necessary training a reality, we will need to keep students home on each building’s designated training day to allow our staff to complete this important work. We recognize that this is inconvenient for parents and we apologize for this; however, we must continue to prioritize safety.
Please note that the Pleasant Lake Elementary Staff Training Day (No School for Students) will take place on Wednesday, December 15th. We will have a school-wide training/drill for students and staff in school on Thursday, December 16th towards the end of the day.
Please note that I will send an email on Monday, December 13th. The email will provide you with additional details regarding the school wide training/drill that your children will participate in.
Elementary principals will be collaborating together to ensure student training is developmentally appropriate and takes the needs of our elementary students into account. This training will last for roughly an hour.
This training is necessary so we can all be as prepared as possible to ensure the safety of everyone. We appreciate all of your help and support.
BUS 130 CANCELLED THIS WEEK
We have been notified that Bus Route 130 will be canceled the week of December 13th-17th. Please note there might be an occasional occurrence where the buses are running late. Please contact the transportation hotline at 248-956-5199 if your bus is running more than 10 minutes late.
We are strongly recommending all parents who have NOT yet obtained an Anchors Away number to please contact the office so we can send one home with your student(s). You will not be allowed to enter the Anchors Away line without a number.
**If you already have an Anchors Away number you do not need to do anything. Please just make sure your student(s) know daily their end of day plans, if they change please let the office know before 3:30 P.M. ****
We truly appreciate your continued support and grace as we navigate these unprecedented staffing challenges together.
SCHOOL ARRIVAL REMINDER
Due to bus cancellations we have many new drivers at drop off in the morning. I wanted to respectfully remind everyone that cars are NOT allowed in the front bus loop during arrival unless your child is tardy to school and are being directed to do so by our crossing guard.
You may park in the main parking lot and walk your child to the main doors but please be sure to NOT park in any handicapped parking spots nor block the crosswalk in anyway.
We have children with physical disabilities that need to access the parking spots and crosswalk each day. Thank you for following the procedures we have in place for all of our families to ensure a safe start to the school day.

PLE COVID-19 STUDENT SCREENING CHECKLIST AND NEXT STEPS
In an effort to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all of our students and staff we are requesting the support of all families in monitoring the health of our children.
In some ways we are experiencing the typical school year with students not feeling well. It is typical for students to experience a runny nose, headache, stomach ache, or a variety of other symptoms. However, we are also experiencing members of our school community who are testing positive with Covid-19.
We wanted to provide some guidance for our families on what steps to follow if your child is not feeling well.
- Step 1:
- Please use the Student Screening Checklist to determine if your child is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19
- If your child is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 based on the Student Screening Checklist, there are three options in order to return to school
- Please review this information and reference it in the event your child is not feeling well
- Step 2:
- Please contact our attendance line at 248-956-2890
- If your child did passes the Student Screening Checklist, please indicate that to our office staff.
- If your child did not pass the Student Screening Checklist, please let our staff know if you are getting your child tested, excluding for 10 days, or have an alternate diagnosis
Feel free to call us when in doubt with what to do. We would rather act cautiously then make a decision that could negatively impact your children, other children and the adults that work at Pleasant Lake Elementary.
Thank you for your support and don’t hesitate to contact our main office at 248.956.2800 if you have any questions and/or concerns.
HEALTH SCREENING BEFORE YOU COME TO SCHOOL
We continue to urge all families to check your child's health daily and make decisions that will help ensure we keep our students, staff, and community healthy and safe.
Daily Health Checks: Please check your child(ren) daily for ANY signs of illness before attending school. Check for the following symptoms:
- Fever/Chills
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
- Muscle of Body Aches
- Headache
- New loss of smell or taste
- Sore throat
- Congestion
- Runny Nose
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Diarrhea
If your child has any of these symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep them home until they are feeling better! We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe!

Visit the Pleasant Lake Elementary PTA Website for more information on the PLE PTA, sign up for membership, and to learn about PTA events and how you can get involved.
Kroger Community Rewards Program
The PTA needs your help in providing our students and staff with as many resources as possible. One way the PTA helps is by contributing the funds earned through the Kroger Community Rewards program. If you shop at Kroger, we ask you to enroll your card to earn money for the PTA. This program does not take away your rewards earned toward gas or any other benefits. It is an additional way that Kroger gives back to the community. If you were enrolled in the past, please make sure to re-enroll and select Pleasant Lake Elementary PTA to earn the community rewards. You can follow the link provided here https://www.kroger.com/account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow
Also, if you have other family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) that shop at Kroger or Kroger affiliated stores encourage them to enroll their rewards card and select your student’s PTA for community rewards. Every little bit helps our students and staff.
Thank you,
Katarina Gasevski
PTA Co-V.P. and Scrips Coordinator
Absences and Notes to School
If you intend to keep your child home on a school day for any reason, please use our attendance hotline at 248-956-2890. You may leave a voicemail message 24 hours a day. If we do not receive a call from you, we will call you to make sure that your child is indeed absent.
The Transportation Department will not issue bus passes for after school study, play dates etc. Bus passes will be issued for shared custody, day care, babysitting, or other emergencies. The Transportation Department will also issue year-long passes for in-district transfer and school of choice students when there is room on the bus.
If your child's transportation/dismissal for the end of the day changes in any way, please send in a note at the beginning of the day to your child's teacher or the office. If this changes during the school day, please call our secretaries before 3:00 p.m. We will always make sure your child gets to the correct place at the end of the day, but we ask for your help with this by notifying us early in the day or with a note. Thank you!
