4th Grade~~River Place Elementary~~October 14, 2013

The Texas Book Festival!

Every year the Texas Book Festival brings in local elementary students to help introduce authors. This will be Mrs. Stern's third year to participate. She is still looking for student volunteers to help introduce children's author/illustrator Adam Rex on Sunday, October 27th, at 1:00 in the Children's Read to Me Tent at the state capitol grounds! She currently just has 3 students who have signed up, and a group of about 10 students is best. It takes about 45 minutes, we introduce the author, listen to him read his new book to the crowd, then we escort him to the signing tent where he will autograph books for our students first. We have been reading some of his books in class and getting to know his "author's craft" very well. We will put together our presentation during lunch over the next two weeks. Please let Mrs. Stern know asap if you are interested in having your child be a part. This is not a school sponsored event, so parents will be responsible for getting their child to the festival and back.

Students of the week will present their All About Me poster, that they made at school, to the class on Monday and on Friday may bring in a favorite item to share, read from a favorite book, or display a talent to the class.

Taylor's News!

This week in Math and Science:

Math– Students will continue working with Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions and then we will begin Multiplication. Please remind your children to practice those multiplication facts! 4th grade goal is 50 correct facts in 3 minutes.

Science – We really enjoyed learning about Solar Energy in the garden last Thursday! This week we will explore Thermal Energy and then review all the forms of Enegry we have learned about so far to prepare for our end of 9 weeks Science Performance Task.

This week in Language Arts and Social Studies:

READING: This week we will be studying multiple meaning words. This will include homonyms (words that are spelled the same and sound the same but have different meanings: ie. bed/bed, bed you sleep in, a flower bed), homophones (words that are sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings: ie. maid, made), and homographs (words that are spelled the same but sound different and have different meanings: ie. produce, produce~ to make something/fresh fruit or veggies).

WRITING: We are working on using voice in our writing and understanding the difference between using first person and third person point of view.

SPELLING: This week's spelling words come from Unit 7. Our spelling skill concept this week again is suffixes. We will be reviewing the meanings of such suffixes as: -s, --ing, -er, -less, -est. Spelling words for the week will be recorded by students in the far right column of the week's agenda. Pace Language Arts students will have an extra 8 words per week. Any students wishing to include the pace words into their spelling test may do so.

All homework can be accessed online through our class websites (see homework links above). We will have 2 pages for Math and 2 pages for Language Arts each week. If you are unable to print the pages, students are encouraged to put answers on regular notebook paper and bring in the answers on Friday. If you won't have access to a computer during the week, please let your homeroom teacher know early in the week. ;)

Students can access their homeroom's class blog from home. The blog gives them an opportunity to practice writing and communication skills in an ever expanding digital world. We have discussed the importance of students using their best "netiquette"! Manners online are just as important as in person. "Treat others how you want to be treated!"
