Dear Noyes Families,
Your child’s report card is currently available for viewing through the ASPEN Family Portal. I am highlighting some information for you to keep in mind while reading our standards-based report cards.
The proficiency determinations on Sudbury’s elementary report cards for Mathematics; English Language Arts; and Science, Technology and Engineering are standards-based, reflecting the Massachusetts State Frameworks for these curriculum areas. The new Social Studies and Civics standards, which are being implemented over three years, will be reflected in our report card in the future, likely next year. Proficiency determinations reflect the actual skills and understandings teachers are addressing through instruction.
The standards-based report card communicates student progress towards meeting grade specific end-of-year learning standards. Student learning is assessed using multiple measures, including assessments, performance tasks, and observable learning behaviors. Academic performance indicators are observable and objective, describing what students should know and/or be able to do at the end of the academic year.
Students receive marks based on their current proficiency level with each standard. These include:
P -- indicates that the student consistently and independently demonstrates proficiency in terms of understanding and application of the grade-level standard
G -- indicates that the student is making steady growth towards consistent understanding and application of the grade level standard. A mark of “G” can be expected, especially when a new concept or skill is introduced
S -- indicates that the student is progressing towards grade-level standards, with additional time and support
N -- indicates that the student is not yet demonstrating progress towards the grade-level standard
X -- indicates that the standard was not assessed that term. While not all standards will be assessed every term, by the completion of the year of study proficiency ratings will be recorded in all standards.
Standards-based reporting is based on the belief that every child can learn given adequate instruction and practice opportunities. Knowing where students are in terms of their progress towards mastery of grade level standards helps teachers plan their instruction. It also helps students and families identify learning priorities, including the development of intervention plans, 504 Plans, and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and benchmarks.
If you have questions about standards-based progress reporting and/or your child’s specific ratings, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Annette Doyle
