Greeting from Principal Becker
This is my 24th year as an educator in the Lincoln County School District and my 2nd year as the Kindergarten - 2nd grade principal at Yaquina View. My husband, Mark, and I have been married for 10 years and we have one daughter, Maddie, who is a 2nd grader at Yaquina View.
We started this school year with some significant changes from the previous school year. Our school district added an addition to the West end of our school which houses two additional classrooms; an adult bathroom; and office space that is used by itinerant staff and myself. The two new classrooms are now home to one 1st grade classroom and our ESL (English as a Second Language) program. By adding these two classrooms, we were able to shift some other programs around so that our Specials classes each have their own instructional space, with the exception of Chromebooks, which is taught in the regular classroom. The thing we are most excited about is that Music is now in Room 19 which is a large space and enables our music teacher to set out instruments for students to play and provides space for movement in Music.
In order to have space for indoor recess that gives students space to run, we moved our lunch service to classrooms. Lunch in the classrooms presents challenges with keeping things clean, but has proven to be a calmer more relaxed atmosphere for eating lunch. Our teachers are able to support students with general table manners and they use the time as another opportunity to have check in time with students.
I know that it was quite a shock to have school start at 7:45 AM. The earlier start time was necessary in order to release school early enough for our students to be the first to be picked up in the afternoon. We have appreciated our school families agility in the earlier start time ~ an unforeseen benefit has been the number parents that are able to walk their child(ren) down to their classrooms and still make it to work on time. For some families, the ability to walk their child down the hall is the one connection to the school they are able to make and we LOVE seeing all of you in our halls.
Our staff focus for the school year will be to continue our focus on Inquiry based learning, strengthening literacy skills in our students, and supporting the social and emotional development of our students through Conscious Discipline. We will begin featuring what the focus means and looks like in subsequent newsletters. My personal professional goal is to provide opportunities for parents to provide input, ask questions, and meet monthly with me through Coffee Hours and/or Appetizer Hours.

Update on 4th Street Closure
LCSD and Yaquina View were notified that the work was to begin October 3rd and continue through October 30th. Work has not begun as of today (Wednesday).
The City of Newport assures us that work on 4th Street is still coming. The contractor for the City is working to complete paving of Bay Boulavard as well as paving the parking lot at the Embarcadero before they move up to 4th Street. The weather has been problematic for continuous work since they cannot pave in the rain. Driving along Bay Blvd, it is evident they are completing sidewalks and ADA ramps along Bay Blvd and had hopes to have work this past Monday.
During all of the work along Bay Blvd, the City also identified a sinkhole on Highway 20 at Eads Street that needs to be repaired quickly before it causes a more significant issue. The City has asked the Contractor to help them complete that work which may occur before they move to 4th Street since the sinkhole is an emergency. The City has assured us/Yaquina View that they will keep us up to date on the progress of getting the work started on 4th Street.
We appreciate the quick response by all of our families when we made the changes to dismissal for the anticipated October 3rd closure of 4th Street and we cannot thank you enough for following all of our requests for the shifting of dismissal processes. The impact was primarily for 2nd grade families staging at the church and for car pick up families waiting until 1:50/2:50 to come into the parking lot. In addition, we appreciate how understanding everyone has been while we are in this holding pattern of waiting for the 4th Street project to begin. We will share information with you as it is given to us.
