A school for all - Happy, Smart and Proud
Week 3, Term 3, 2019
Dear parents, carers and community members,
Term three is well and truly off to a great start, with so many exciting opportunities having happened with many more on the horizon.
Goal Setting Interviews
Throughout week 1 and 2, we have been meeting with families to discuss students' Personal Learning Pathways and Individual Learning goals. It is fantastic to see so many students reach their goals for Semester 1 and feel a sense of accomplishment. If you have not yet met with your teacher and or would like a phone meeting, please give us a call to make an appointment as soon as possible.
NAIDOC
Last Thursday we hosted Kindergarten students from across the Little Bay Community whilst our students in years 1-6 went to Soldiers Settlement, Malabar, Matraville, Chifley and Matraville Sports High schools. At LaPa we were also joined by 2020 kindy families and pre-schoolers from Peter Pan and Gujaga. I would like to publically thank Aunty Selina's leadership and organisation of this event. You can see photos on our FaceBook page.
Kids vs Wild
Burri Burri went to the Field of Mars Education Centre yesterday for the Kids vs Wild excursion. Working as a team, students orientated maps, navigated with a compass, solved riddles, unravelled clues and cracked the code to complete an outdoor challenge course. Students used critical and creative thinking and built personal and social capability and worked collaboratively and constructively in a variety of situations. Thank you Mrs Konjevic for organising this exciting opportunity for your students.
Deadly Awards
Last Friday in the Great Hall at The University of Technology Sydney, students and staff were recognised for their contributions, efforts and leadership in schools across Sydney.
Brandon-Lee was awarded the Deadly Kids Award for his continued effort and contribution to our school. As a student leader he has on more than one occasion represented our school at community events making himself, his family and school very proud.
Belinda Cooley was awarded the Aunty Fay Carroll Memorial Award . Belinda Cooley has made a huge contribution to the lives of all students but in particular the students she directly supports as a School Learning and Support Officer. Belinda is an incredibly hardworking, dedicated and professional member of the La Perouse team and works in collaboration with teaching staff to ensure students, especially those with disabilities, are feeling safe and secure and can access the curriculum on the same basis as their peers. Belinda is always open to professional learning and projects that teaching staff are embarking on as part of the school plan and is interested and enthusiastic to also come on board in order to support students and school priorities.
Beverly Park was awarded the Gamarada (Friend) Award. Beverly has made considerable contributions to support the wellbeing and learning of all students at La Perouse but in particular our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. She has a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding of our local community and has developed strong partnerships with families. Beverly ensures hat students have access to quality, engaging and hands on learning and supports new staff to develop an understanding of our school context in order to meet community needs. Beverly seeks out opportunities and grants that support a wide variety of focus areas such as; sustainability/ environmental, mathematics and creative arts programs embedding Aboriginal education as well as meeting the interests of our students.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Each term we have a special assembly where we present Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for the achievement of Dojo points for following our school rules (being a learner, being responsible and being respectful). Last term at our Silver Award assembly, the following students were presented with their silver awards: Congratulations Charbel, Malakai, Brandon-Lee, Benjamin and Amelia.
At the end of term 3, we will hold our Gold Award assembly followed by our term 4 Presentation Night, when we will award PBL badges and trophies for those students who have reached these levels. Ask your child today how they are going.
Art Therapy
This term we have Claire Lenne completing her final placement for a Masters of Art Therapy at Western Sydney University, supporting students at La Perouse PS. Claire has worked professionally as a counsellor in Tasmania and Western Australia and is artist in her own right. To find out more please read this information flyer.
School Maintenance
Our roof, gutter and downpipe maintenance is almost complete with internal painting works having commenced last Saturday. In approximately 2 weeks time our canteen roof and pergola is also being replaced. Thank you so much for your patience.
Before and After School Care
The Department of Education wants to hear from parents about before and after school care arrangements that will support them most effectively. Parents and carers who need access to before and after school care and vacation care should complete the Service NSW form (Chrome, Safari). This includes parents who currently have access to care and require more or a different type of care. The information collected will be used to better understand what parents need and where. This information will be used to plan for and manage the availability of new and expanded services. The new site will allow parents to tell us the areas of need but not book places. To access before and after school care, parents still need to contact the relevant service directly. Service information is available on the Child Care Finder.
NDIS Support - Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation
Marjorie Talbot has been working out of our Koori room in order to provide advice and support coordination in relation to NDIS. This service is limited and will not be available long term so we encourage all Aboriginal families with children who may need support such as Speech and Occupational Therapy to take advantage of this opportunity.
