Point View School
NEWSLETTER - Week 10, Term 2 - 8 July 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
As we reach the end of Term 2, I would like to thank the Point View community for supporting each other through these times.
The kindness and consideration I see in and around the school makes us all feel valued, but it makes the world of difference to our tamariki. Their sense of belonging and understanding of who they are is built up by all of us around them as we demonstrate the interpersonal qualities I have described.
It is looking right now as if we will start next term with the same kinds of ‘Orange’ settings as we have now. If this should change at any stage, we will convene our Emergency Response Team, carry out our risk analysis, adjust the schools guidelines accordingly and let everyone know.
I wish all our Point View whānau a safe holiday with plenty of opportunities to refresh and renew and reconnect.
SCHOOL BOARD PARENT ELECTION 2022
Our school will be undertaking a parent election for 5 School Board vacancies. This process will start with the issuing of nomination papers to our caregiver community by Friday 15th July 2022.
We have employed CES to undertake the election process on our behalf. This year with legislative change, our nomination form and full instruction on how to place your nomination into our own School’s Election website will be emailed to you if we have your email address in our database or you will receive it by post if we don’t have your email in our database.
Nomination papers will also be available at the school office. The school will send those on to CES for processing upon receipt from candidates.
Nominations close on Wednesday 3rd August at 12 noon. Election day is Wednesday 7th September.
We look forward to your participation in this process.

TERM 3 - YEAR 5 AND 6 ELECTIVES
During Term 3 our Year 5 and 6 students have the option to choose electives that they would like to engage in. These are usually held for 5 Wednesday afternoons in Term 3. Students really enjoy this opportunity to engage in some different learning. We would love some volunteers to come and take a group of students and teach them a skill you have.
This could be anything from learning a new language, knitting, creating origami, learning a cultural dance or game or any other activity you think would be engaging. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to make connections with other adults and we would really value your time
Please contact Mrs Joshua-Bargh on t.joshua-bargh@pointview.school.nz if this is something you could consider.
DR NIKITA GROOT - BIOLOGIST
Dr Nikita Groot, a biologist at Auckland University, came to visit the school to dispel stereotypes of what a scientist looked and acted like. She arrived on her motorbike and spoke to all the seniors about minibeasts. The kids absolutely loved her presentation and we now have an abundance of aspiring scientists in the senior school!

STEM - YEARS 2 TO 6
Traditionally Matariki was a time when Maori planted crops for future harvest and sewed / weaved new clothes and cloth for the coming new year. Classes in Y2 to Y6 have mirrored these skills this term, both in the Tech Room and The Hive.
All middle school classes designed and hand sewed their own reusable fruit bags in their STEM sessions this term. We hope that these would prove useful and prevent a few hundred more single use plastic bags heading to landfill. Please do email me any photos of our bags being used in local supermarkets. I will try and get local newspapers to run a story about the children’s good work.
A green fingered keen GATE STEM group of Y6 kids recently completed a great harvest of carrots, spinach and bok choy. The brussel sprouts and peas are still growing well in the ground but our beetroots were unfortunately a huge fail. No kiwi burgers this year !!! Room 8’s broccoli empire is currently growing as well as ever, but are not quite ready to harvest. Catherine Li (a keen Year 5 gardener) enlisted a few friends and started a second crop rotation hoping for lots of bok choy and (stinky) garlic as the weather warms up.
There are still a few planting box areas available to any families keen to do their own 'Matariki Planting’ during the upcoming holiday. First come first served (hint hint). There are three areas where little if any prep is required before you plant. We can supply you whatever seedlings you/ your kids want (that are available) and of course, your family keeps whatever they manage to grow and harvest.
If any families are keen on supporting this community garden idea just send me an email (s.rankin@pointview.school.nz) and we can plan a project that suits you.
Happy harvesting
