Principal's Message
Hello CV Family,
Here we are at the halfway point of the first quarter! Our performances, athletics, and a very busy campus are definitely in full swing. Due to the early start this year, I want to encourage all of our students and parents to pay close attention to the next few weeks academically. The workload and expectations have been steadily rising, and students typically find this time of year challenging. Check-in with your student and their teacher. These next four weeks are already starting to go fast. We are here to work together, so please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Typically I will highlight important information that is contained within the newsletter or information I want to personally share with our school community in the format of Three Dots from Mr. Dumas (I had to add a couple of extra dots this week!):
Fall Intersession: Students failing in core areas (Math, ELA, Biology) at the progress report time should see outreach from GPS’s Office of Federal Programs. This outreach will outline an opportunity, should their grades remain unsatisfactory, to attend a one-week session during the second week of Fall Break. Students selected to participate in this program will be required to attend five 90-minute sessions for each area they have failed, a maximum of two sessions. Students who attend all five days and complete required coursework will receive grade enhancement (current class grade will be brought up to a passing average of 60%. The Office of Federal Programs will reach out to families who are in line to qualify for the program next week. Courses eligible for this opportunity are: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and/or Intermediate Algebra, ELA 9-12, and Biology. Once information has been sent to parents we will have a team that follows up with students and their progress throughout the remainder of the quarter.
Progress Reports: Progress reports for the halfway mark of the first quarter are available. Please log into Infinite Campus to review your student’s progress. Please know that this is a check-in for student progress and should be viewed as a means to assess how things are going thus far. Our teachers have tutoring opportunities available at different times on our Advisory Tutoring Schedule. I encourage you to reach out to your student’s teacher with any questions or concerns you may have at this time.
Coyote Time: Coyote Time is built into your child’s schedule on Wednesdays. This time serves multiple purposes. It has been utilized to share some of our beginning of the year procedural processes, such as statements of awareness; we have also used it to help students with organizational and time management skills, developing a growth mindset, as well as delivering content that we would typically have to interrupt the school day to deliver through special schedules. In feedback from the CVHS Site Council last year we began sharing the upcoming topics with you just in case you were interested in what we are sharing. A Coyote Time segment of the newsletter briefly addresses upcoming Coyote Time presentations. If you have any questions, reach out to Mrs. Jacobson whose contact information is shared below, for more details.
Speaking of Coyote Time, our annual SOS (Signs of Suicide) presentation is this month. Content and information are shared below.
CVHS Site Council: In our last newsletter, we shared information regarding our Site Council. With our first meeting on 9/14, we can still add any interested parents. If you are interested in serving on the site council, please use the following link to nominate yourself as a potential committee member. The site council comprises representatives from the Campo Verde community. The council meets with the Principal and other school staff monthly during the school year to discuss various topics, share information and broaden understanding of school-related issues.
Members work together to:
Advance the action steps of Campo Verde’s Continuous Improvement Plan.
Ensure effective involvement of parents and community to support the partnership between school and community stakeholders.
Involve parents and the community in an organized and timely manner with the planning, review, and implementation of programs and policies of Campo Verde and Gilbert Public Schools.
Attend the monthly Site Council meetings.
Meeting dates: 9/14, 10/26, 11/30, 1/25, 2/22, & 4/26
Time: 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: Room 113 Student Services (front office)
We appreciate your continued support!
Best regards,
Mr. Tyler Dumas

Freshmen Family Meetings
Dear Freshmen Families,
We would like to welcome our Freshmen Coyotes to the Campo Verde High School family!
School counselors work to address students' academic, career, and social-emotional development ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. CVHS Counselors are assigned to students by an alphabet split of last names, please see your student’s assigned counselor below.
The transition from middle school to high school can be challenging (lots of questions, planning out classes, making new friends, where do I fit in?). High school years are full of growth, promise, excitement, frustration, disappointment, and hope. It is the time when students begin to discover what the future holds for them. Our hope is that we can help make that transition a little less stressful. We would like to meet with YOU and YOUR STUDENT for a 30 minute individual Freshman Family Meeting in person. During this time we will discuss your student’s four-year plan, goal setting, and your counselor can answer any other questions you may have.
Freshmen Next Steps:
Review this Freshmen Resource Presentation to help prepare for your Freshman Family Meeting.
SIGN UP for a meeting date and time below through Calendly with your assigned counselor.
Here is a preview of what will be discussed during your meeting 4 Year Plan Handout. Please come prepared with your thoughts, ideas, and/or questions.
We look forward to meeting you and we are excited to work with you and your child throughout the next four years! Go Yotes!
PLEASE NOTE: These available time slots are for Freshmen Family Meetings Only.

NHS
After its first meeting in early August, the Campo Verde National Honors Society had its first social. The social was a tissue drive for teachers, with ice cream served as a bonus for bringing tissue boxes. Because of the efforts of NHS students, a collective total of over 100 tissue boxes were brought for Campo Teachers and are being distributed to each teacher. Great job NHS students!
NHS Tutoring:
Additionally, NHS offers tutoring every Tuesday and Thursday in the library, after school, for any core subject like math, english, science, or social studies and the majority of electives. For any help, see any NHS student in the library.
NHS Membership Information:
National Honor Society membership drives happen once a year. In March of 2023, all Sophomores and Juniors who have a 3.8 unweighted GPA will receive an invitation to apply to NHS. All applicants must complete the application which includes several essay responses, cumulated over 20 service hours in their Freshmen and Sophomore years, participate in a club or sports activity and finally participate in a leadership role. Applicants are also required to receive three teacher recommendations and one community recommendation. Once the deadline to submit the applications has passed, all applications will be reviewed by Campo Verde’s Faculty Council to determine acceptance. The process concludes with a formal induction ceremony held in April. Please contact Shawna Stea shawna.stea@gilbertschools.net ) or Kathleen Zondlewski (kathleen.zondlewski@gilbertschools.net ) for more information.

Choir
It’s already a great year in choir! Each of this year’s three choirs are learning new music, site reading and sounding amazing. We can’t wait for our quickly approaching first concert. Please join us onTuesday, September 27 at 7:00 PM in the CVHS auditorium.
Concert Choir began the year with our annual team building retreat at Pinerock Camp in Prescott, Arizona. It was a time filled with team challenges, archery, games, beautiful scenery, cooler weather, friendships new and old and, of course, music. Every student in attendance came away with a greater sense of the significance he/she holds in this very special familial community that our choir program builds. The result of this is evident in their hard work to excel as a unit and make beautiful music.

Library Updates
*********************************
Library News and Information:
Mrs. Flaherty and Mrs. Jeffers would like to invite all the new freshmen and returning students into the library this school year. The library is open from 7:15-3:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday we are open from 7:15-2:30. Students will find thousands of books, hundreds of encyclopedias, school textbooks, credible databases, computer/printer access and Chromebook charging stations. All of our electronic resources can be accessed by students through their GPS portal login or on the CVHS website.
- Over the summer the library ran a summer reading program for the first time. We had over 200 books read from 30 students. Prizes were given out to each student for 1 book read, 5 books read and 10 books read. The top reader read 30 books and won the grand prize of a Homecoming ticket! We will run the program again next summer.
- August was a great month in the library! We had over 1000 circulations, numerous classes utilizing our resources and lots of activity during the lunch hours. It’s time to switch out our displays and with that will come more checkouts. We are so happy to provide for our avid readers and support our tentative readers.
- We always have a display of the books that just arrived to us. It’s right by the door so students can find them easily. And right above the new books we post pictures of the covers of the books we will be getting soon. Students are able to reserve them, or any book, if they would like.
- Please consider donating any new or used books to our school library. New releases and popular teen titles (such as John Green books) are most needed, however, any books brought in will be assessed for appropriate use. If they are not needed on campus, they will be used as trades towards purchasing appropriate titles. Simply leave the books with the receptionist or have your child bring them into the library. Thank you for supporting your library!
Chromebook Information:
We recommend reading the Student Device Handbook. Let your students know that they can come to the library any time they have questions or need help with their Chromebook.
If a student is having problems with his/her Chromebook, the place to go is the library. We will put it in for repair and give the student a loaner Chromebook until the original is fixed.
Tip: Students should login every morning once on campus and keep the GPS Portal tab open all the time.
Digital Citizenship:
Digital Citizenship addresses 21st century skills such as: Media Balance & Well-Being, Privacy & Security, Digital Footprint & Identity, Relationships & Communication, Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech, News & Media Literacy. Here is a short video from commonsense on digital citizenship: What is Digital Citizenship?
The Gilbert Public School district uses Common Sense as our resource of information and Campo Verde teachers will be teaching all our students these digital skills from its resources. Common Sense is a trusted site grounded in research with its mission as, “helping kids thrive in a rapidly changing world”. This site also has a section for parents so that you can support your children, no matter what age, with these skills. We recommend that you take a look at it, but we will also use this newsletter as a way to give you resources on these topics.
