TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Weekly School Blog Jan. 14th-18th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
As we reflect on another fabulous week Miss Terra and Miss Michelle discussed the students, their achievements and interests throughout the week. It seems that each week this discussion leads us down the same path. We always end up discussing how different each student is from personality to likes and dislikes to developmental skills. No two can be taken as alike or held to the exact same expectations. We realize that this is why the program is designed to allow for individuality, and individualized instruction and for at the end of each day or week for every student to feel successful. The diversity of the projects and learning labs supports the individuality in the diverse learners.
Culinary Arts: organic fresh salsa straight from our school garden harvest brought much excitement. Students celebrated their efforts in the garden over the past few months weeding, watering and tending to the herbs, peppers, and tomatoes. The peppers were a special labor of love as they were started from seeds taken from peppers that Miss Terra had brought in. Students prepared the tomatoes for the salsa by dicing to fit into the food processor. Landon exclaimed, “I did it myself, Miss Terra” showing pride in his accomplishment. After a trip to the compost bin students watched the tomatoes and peppers churn together in the processor. We scooped into a large bowl added cilantro and lime juice and then got to mixing. In no time colorful healthy salsa was ready for tasting. We served the salsa with tortilla chips and the healthy snack was a hit.
Pottery Project: Inspirational Name Plaques. Due to the fact that this pottery project is very detailed, we knew that we needed to incorporate a planning stage for students prior to working with the clay. After showing students some of the samples, the tools and the different stamps that could be used students began a sketch of what their plaque would look like. The focal point is an inspirational word that they choose so as a group we brainstormed and listed many. Students added there chosen word of inspiration to their sketch. Now they were ready, to begin with, the clay. With their planning sketch nearby they were able to incorporate their ideas successfully. After a trip to the kiln, the pieces will be returned to us for glazing!! Thank you, Miss Mary from Open Studio, for another wonderful pottery project!
Sandbox, sensory and scooter fun where on everyone’s bucket list this week. Students were given opportunities to engage in all based on their interest!
Tuesday was National Hat Day. It was fun to see everyone’s silly and creative hats. We learned some interesting facts about hats too!!
Thursday was Kid Inventor's day a perfect conclusion to our Rosie Revere Field trip. Students have been enjoying the story of Rosie Revere Engineer all month. We read the story again on Thursday comparing similarities and differences between the show and the book. Students have also been planning and developing their own inventions over the past couple of weeks. Some are complete and on display in the rock room while others are still in the building and development stage!! We discussed our inventions that we have made or plan to make and had some fun in our kid inventors photo booth.
Art Appreciation: Jackson Pollock was a very unconventional artist who used gallons of paint sticks, dowels, and house paint brushes to create his art. His canvases were very large and the floor was most often his workspace. Pollock never had an outcome in mind for his work and thought doing ruined the process. His technique of splatting, pouring and dripping paint is always a young artist favorite.
Looking forward to next week:

Welcome Little Tree Hugger Saylor
TerraNichol Academy Little Tree Hugger Play Program ignites children’s innate capacity to learn through unstructured play in nature, fostering healthy development and nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers, collaborative leaders and environmental stewards. A nature program uses the natural world to support dual goals that address both child development and conservation values. These include the development of the world of the child (in all domains – cognitive, physical, social, emotional, aesthetic, and spiritual) and the development of an ecological identity or environmental ethic. Let's GO WILD! We love mud. We jump in puddles. We eat from our garden. We climb hills and trees. We sing loudly. We are mindful. We respect our earth. We respect living things. We practice sustainability. Nature is a wonderful teacher!
This program is a classroom without walls used to introduce students to our program 2 days per week or to support families in homeschooling. This program began in January! Feel free to share with friends or family who may be interested.
This week in The Little Tree Hugger Program Saylor enjoyed participating in culinary arts, art appreciation, and playscape discovery!
Planning Ahead
2019 Enrollment
Enrollment for 2019-2020 School Year
Based on many inquiries to the school about new enrollment and new families already securing their space in the program for 2019-2020 school year we will be sending out re-enrollment for our existing students and siblings early in February. Typically we do this in March but because of the volume of interest for next year, we will need to evaluate space in the program for new incoming students. Be on the watch for information coming out to all families in February 2019. This will include our Kindergarten and First Grade program.
Re-enrollment forms and Registration Fee submitted by the deadline will guarantee the student's space for the upcoming school year. If forms and registration fee is not submitted by the deadline we will assume you are forfeiting your space.

$350 spent in the school eco-friendly store per school year.

Using essential oils is intuitively simple and highly satisfying. However, the many oils available with their numberless combinations and wellness applications can be a bit overwhelming to beginners. As a simple first step on your journey with essential oils, we recommend a trio of lavender, lemon, and peppermint, three of our most popular oils. They will provide you and your family a compelling experience with the life-enhancing properties of therapeutic-grade essential oils. This kit includes 15mL bottles of the following oils:
