TuES News
Tuscarora Elementary School - September 11, 2020
Dear Timberwolf Families,
Week 2 has come to an end! Our Timberwolves have shown their Pack Promise by...
- Responsibly attending classes and completing assignments
- Respectfully interacting with others online
- demonstrating a Positive mindset
- Accepting others and their needs
Teachers have raved about students and families... and we have had some very heartwarming and kind messages from parents. You will never know how much a positive message means to a teacher (or administrator).
Please continue to reach out if you need help. We are dedicated to supporting students and families in any way we can. Read below to hear about the new ways we will be supporting students next week!
Stay safe,
Dr. Mazaleski

Another Reminder: Student Learning and Behavior Expectations
Please remind your students that the TuES learning and behavioral expectations remain in place in the virtual setting.
Teachers have shared this with students during this first week. Our Pack Promise is in effect in the school building, as well as in virtual learning classes! We will revisit the expectations next week and periodically during the virtual learning model.
Parents are asked to talk with their students about these expectations. If students or parents see any inappropriate behavior, please notify the teacher or school staff. Both teachers and families can remind students of their roles and responsibilities.
Any inappropriate behavior will be handled in alignment with the FCPS Discipline Regulation.
Regulation 400-08 - Discipline
With everyone's help, we will ensure a safe and positive virtual learning environment for all students.
Some other FCPS Policies and Regulations that you may want to review are included below.
Policy 444 - Educational Equity and Excellence
Policy 439 - Dress Code for Students
Regulation 500-32 - Replacement of Lost or Damaged Instructional Materials
A Message from FCPS:
Upcoming Assessments (Grades 1-5)
As we transition students to learning online, we must also transition how we assess that learning. In addition to the formative assessments that students will be given from their classroom teacher, FCPS will also administer the Performance Series assessment at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. This will allow schools to ascertain a students’ current level of performance and will allow schools to monitor growth.
The Performance Series assessment is an entirely web-based adaptive assessment. Based on the students’ responses, the assessment will provide questions that are more or less difficult until it can accurately report the students’ performance level. This will provide school staff information on student proficiency in reading and mathematics that will help drive personalized instruction and measure student progress.
The Performance Series assessment will be administered to students at Tuscarora in grades 1-5. Your child's teacher will be in touch with more details regarding this assessment.

Schoology Tip of the Week
Schoology Tips for Parent and Students:
Thank you to all parents for your at-home support! As the year continues, please reach out to the school if you are in need of additional supports. Here is the tip for parents to solve most Schoology issues:
Many common issues with schoology are due to students not logged into the chrome browser. Schoology works best on chromebooks and personal laptops when they are using Google Chrome. Students must use chrome to link to all FCPS accounts, passwords and features. This will give them the same access as in the school building. Google Chrome can be downloaded using this link here: install chrome from here.
Here are two important links for at-home support for families:
1) Schoology Troubleshooting Guide
2) Schoology Support Resources for Families Website
3) TUES Student Tech Support Site
Other tips and tricks will be shared in feature S'Mores. Questions can also be sent to our TUES Schoology Ambassador, Mr. Collins at justin.collins@fcps.org
Timberwolf Tech Tip
Our browsers are working hard! Schoology, Google Drive, Lexia and much more. All of this hard work sometimes causes the browser to become bloated with cookies and files. If you notice your browser is acting up or you can not access certain resources try clearing the Browser Data.
Our Media Specialist created a quick video showing you how to do this. A clean browser is a happy browser.

Lexia Issues
We have been having systemic issues with Lexia. Thank you for your patience this week while we wait to hear from Lexia's technology support and FCPS technology department. As of right now, if you have the Series 11 Dell Chromebook, the Chromebook will have to come back into school to be replaced or have the fix applied. The school building is open from 8:30-4, Monday through Friday. Kevin Brown our Technology Coordinator can apply the fix and have Chromebook fixed in about 10 minutes.
Unfortunately, we still do not have an answer as to why students are not able to log into Lexia if they do not have the Series 11 Dell Chromebook. We are aware some students are still seeing the globe with the spinning dots. We hope to have an answer from the technicians by next Tuesday, September 14th.
In the meantime, students who are experiencing this, teachers will provide an alternative independent reading activity instead of Lexia.
Please be on the lookout for upcoming information regarding Lexia. We will communicate when there is a fix!
A Message from the PTA
Hello TuES Community!
As the 2020-2021 school year fast approaches in an environment like we've never experienced, the TuES PTA would like to extend a warm welcome to our new and veteran students, our families, teachers, Administrators and staff.
"Coming Together is a Beginning. Keeping Together is Progress. Working Together is Success." Therefore, it's more important now than ever to come together STRONG and support our children and school. Please join the TuES PTA!
Online payments only at this time. - All donations and $ to the PTA are tax deductible.
Being a member does not mean having to bite chunks out of your time, budget or committing yourself to attending every meeting or volunteering for every event. This is a common false impression many parents have about joining the PTA.
Just by joining, you've already done so much. The membership cost is just $15 per family for the entire school year. Part of that fee goes directly into the TuES PTA budget.
Here is a list of a few activities we currently have planned:
Fall:
Brochure Fundraiser
Spring:
Boosterthon
Virtual Talent Show TBD
