THA Application: IT'S ALIVE!!!
It is my distinct pleasure to announce this year's Honors Appalachia Application is now live for participants.
Created in 2008, this week-long excursion immerses students in the life, beauty, and struggles of the Appalachian region with the aim of enriching the lives of the students and the communities they serve. At each site, teams of students build homes, assist with community projects, and explore the local environment while building community and taking time to reflect. Students return with a better sense of themselves, the world around them, and the energy to contribute locally.
Participants will need to raise $425 throughout the spring semester to come on the trip. Please don't let this deter you from applying.
THE APPLICATION IS DUE NOVEMBER 7th @ MIDNIGHT. Mandatory Kickoff Meeting with $25 deposit will be 3-4 PM on December 12th.

Fourth Friday Field Trip!!!
Friday, October 26th, 1:45 PM
Meet in the Honors Lounge
Named after the book-length poem by Langston Hughes, A Dream Deferred is a multi-experiential and multidisciplinary project exploring how historic systemic policies and practices play out in the nation’s poorest large city. This exhibit aims to help individuals from all backgrounds understand how practices like redlining have impacted the present and will impact the future of our city. Care about equality and social justice? What to better understand this city that you call home? You're definitely going to want to join us!
We will meet in the Honors Lounge at 1:45pm and leave for the subway once we've got everyone checked in. We MUST leave no later than 2pm. You will be provided with round-trip subway fare and entrance to the exhibit for FREE! Space is limited, so be sure to register for your ticket ASAP!

GEOGRAPHIES OF SICKNESS & HEALTH, WEALTH & POVERTY (Environmental Studies 4017.01)

About: “As a physician and a betting man, if I could know only one thing about a person to predict their longevity, it would probably be their address.” – James Hamblin (New York Times, January 27, 2017). Why is where you live such a strong predictor of health? In this course, we aim to find out. We will look at environmental hazards that cause poor health, such as air pollution and tobacco advertising, as well as environmental amenities, such as access to parks and health care. We will investigate how who you are (your race, class, and sex), and who you know (your friends and family), affect how the environment influences your health. And we will explore methods and technologies, such as global positioning systems (GPS), that allow us to track and analyze individuals’ movements and environment-health interactions. Over the course of the semester, students will design and execute an innovative – and real – research project on an environmental health topic of their choice.
About the Professor: I have been a park ranger, an ambulance driver, and a short-order cook, but professor is the best job I’ve ever had. I’ve taught at University of Colorado and, since 2004, at Temple University. My expertise is in the application of geospatial technologies to health and environment, and I am currently Associate Editor of the CDC journal Preventing Chronic Disease. Accomplishments include playing pick-up basketball with former NBA players and skiing down from the top of Mount St. Helens.
