PEER Updates
Over the next few weeks, PEER Helpers here at Rock Ridge will be facilitating a number of initiatives to promote healthy attitudes and behaviors.
First, as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, PEER Helpers will be collaborating with students to represent “National Purple Out Day” on October 20th. On this day, to help raise awareness of domestic violence, PEER Helpers will be wearing purple and handing out purple ribbons to students.
Then, as October is also Bullying Prevention Month, our PEER Helpers have developed an interactive activity for students to share their experiences and learn from one another about how they have prevented bullying. Students should be on the lookout for further information on this important initiative. And lastly, during their Advisory Classes on October 27th, students will be viewing a short video on suicide prevention that was developed by our PEER Helpers. The video aims to provide information on teen suicide, including how to recognize warning signs and where to seek help inside and outside of school.
As background, PEER (Positive, Experiences, in Educational Relationships) is a specialized class in every Loudoun County High School that is designed for student leaders (“PEER Helpers”) to help them develop mentoring skills and teach them how to assist their peers emotionally, socially, and academically. PEER Helpers are trained and supervised to provide outreach services to students who need assistance with individual or school problems. If you or someone you know would like more information on the PEER program at Rock Ridge or would like to meet with a PEER Helper, please contact Ms. Leach (School Counselor), Ms. Tran (School Social Worker), or Ms. Taylor (PEER Teacher) for additional information.
