Happy Holidays!
Can you feel the excitement? Children everywhere are counting down the days & parents are wondering "How will I ever get it all done in time?". Take a few moments amidst the "hustle & bustle" to appreciate the beauty of the season, take advantage of the warm weather, & fondly look back on the incredible year it has been! From all of us at the Lincoln & Cumberland Prevention Coalition, we wish you a wonderful, happy & healthy holiday season!
"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” -Dr. Seuss

A.T.I. (Above the Influence)
Cumberland/Lincoln Prevention Coalition is underway in both communities! In Cumberland, middle school students attended “Family Night”, which gave students an opportunity to see what clubs and programs are available at the high school.
Lincoln ATI students are finishing up a radio PSA and planning their next big event. Stay tuned! Check out the pictures below from the "Family Night"!
ATI “Above the Influence” is a place where teens can learn how to stand up to negative pressures and influences. ATI meets once a week, after school. Youth develop a media campaign to educate and address the negative pressures that they may be facing.. The purpose is to create awareness of the impact of drug abuse and negative pressures on young people. The more aware you are of the types of influence around you, the better prepared you will be to face them. Learn more about the program & check out their website HERE!

Have a Family Member with an Addiction? Don’t Isolate Yourself During the Holidays
Let’s face it. The holidays can be a stressful time for families – especially if you have a loved one with an alcohol or drug addiction. You may feel alone – like you’re the only family in the whole world dealing with a substance abuse issue. Please know that you are not alone. And, while it may seem impossible to enjoy yourself when a love one’s life is out of control, there are things you can do to make yourself feel better.

Practicing Prevention: Holiday Myths
Teen drinking spikes during the holiday season, often because parents buy into some common myths about serving minors alcohol.
Some parents think that allowing teens to drink at home decreases the risk for continued drinking as teens get older but evidence shows that supplying alcohol to minors increases the risk for continued drinking in the teenage years and leads to subsequent problem drinking later in life.
Often it’s said that kids in Europe learn to drink more responsibly because parents allow minors to drink in family settings from a young age. The truth is that a greater percentage of European youth report drinking regularly versus American youth. For a majority of European countries, a greater percentage of young people also report having been intoxicated before the age of 13.
The fact is that there is no “safe use” of alcohol by minors. Keep kids alcohol-free this holiday season — and throughout the New Year.
