PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
I have three important announcements. My first message is that February 9th will be a school day for students. Secondly, I would like to let parents know the invitations for the Breakfasts of Excellence were issued to students today. The third piece of news is about Ms. Margaret White's promotion within Fulton County Schools. The common theme is our clear goal to strive for academic success for our students.
Friday, February 9th has been approved to be reinstated as a school day for all Elkins Pointe students. Originally, this day was earmarked by our School Governance Council (SGC) as a Professional Development Day for teachers, and students were to be given the day off. Because of the snow days, it is necessary and critical for us to support students academically by having them in school and in their classrooms! In a joint decision, our administration and teachers made the call that we just could not lose one more day of instruction. The Elkins Pointe SGC and the FCS District granted permission to reinstate February 9th as a school day for students. Parents, I realize as you read this, you may have commitments for the 9th of February. If you have purchased plane tickets or it would be an extreme hardship for you to reschedule/cancel your plans, I will work with your family to excuse the absence. Should your family wish to request an excused absence for February 9th, please email me directly. Once excused, you will need to contact your child's teachers to ask for all missing assignments. To see the Fulton County Schools Make Up Days, click here.
Promptly at 7:30 AM, the cafeteria doors will open for the Breakfasts of Excellence on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We ask that parents and students arrive as early as possible, between 7:15 AM - 7:30 AM. Breakfast will be served up until the ceremony begins at 7:45 AM. Service will then be paused and will resume only once every student has been recognized. Because we have expanded the scope of recognizing excellence to include attendance with academic achievement, we are expecting an even bigger crowd than previous years. Our excellent students will be treated to chicken biscuits thanks to the generosity of the Roswell Town Center Chick-fil-A. Our PTSA will provide hot coffee, juice, and mini-pastries to our parents and students.
Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Margaret L. White on being promoted to
Associate Superintendent of Professional Learning and Leadership Development. We have been fortunate to have Mrs. White serve our school as the Northwest Area Superintendent. Mr. Clifford Jones, currently the Northeast Area Superintendent will be acting as the Area Superintendent for both the Northwest and Northeast. We wish Mrs. White all the very best in her promoted position!
Have an excellent weekend Titans, and "Good Luck" to our Robotics Team, and Titan Tech Team in their competitions this Saturday!
Sincerely,
Kindra L. Smith, Ed.S

FULTON COUNTY SCHOOLS MAKE UP DAYS
Plan for making up lost instructional time
Fulton County Schools announces that students will make up three of the eight school days that were lost this year due to inclement weather. The three days are February 16, March 9 and March 12.
February 16 was announced earlier this year as a make-up day due to Hurricane Irma school closures, but the district has determined that March 12 will be a second make-up day for the recent snow/ice closures. A third make-up day – March 9 – will be a piloted Digital Learning Day, where students will work independently from home on schoolwork and projects using district-issued mobile devices or home technology. The district will communicate the specifics of the March 9 Digital Learning Day to individual schools and teachers.

How can students participate as a Junior Ambassador?
The JASG requests that any student who meets the participation criteria and eligibility requirements submit an essay, no more than two pages (either handwritten or typed), on why they would make a good Junior Ambassador and representative of Georgia. The student should also submit a single drawing on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of white paper that represents the theme of the convention. In addition, the student should provide a CONFIDENTIAL letter of recommendation (meaning that the letter was written and placed in a sealed envelope before being given to the student for submission) from the student’s teacher or another adult who is not the student’s parent and/or guardian. Lastly, the student should complete and submit an application form, which is available on the APCC page of the JASG’s website atwww.JASGeorgia.org/APCC.
The deadline for submission is February 5, 2018. Any applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
ABOUT APCC

1) generating appreciation for the culture of other nations and regions;
2) promoting mutual understanding and friendship;
3) nurturing international awareness in the region through young people.
The theme of the conference is “We are the BRIDGE: We connect dreams around the world.”
For more information on this year’s conference or if you know of any elementary students who would be interested in applying in future years, please contact the JASG at 404-842-1400 or Admin@JASGeorgia.org. For more information about the APCC itself, please visit www.apcc.gr.jp.
CLINIC CORNER
Prevent the Flu
Tip to Stave Off the Flu:
- The first thing is simple….WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY! Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer/rub. Did you know the single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses is washing your hands? While most of us already know this, it is sometimes hard to remember this simple little important task during a busy day.
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils or other personal items such as towels, combs, brushes, clothes, and cosmetics.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day, and shower after any contact sport.
- Stay home if you are sick and not going to a medical care facility, especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are more severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only after symptoms have improved and after you have had no fever for at least 24 hours.
- Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick and take flu antiviral medications if your doctor prescribes them.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. Viruses lurk in places you wouldn’t think. Everyone is vulnerable to picking up viruses.
- Eat healthy food (fruits and veggies) and drink plenty of fluids.
- Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. Again, get vaccinated against the flu – flu vaccination is the best protection against the flu, and wash your hands frequently!

Attention Elkins Pointe Parents: SPINE ALERT!
The annual Scoliosis Screening Event for EPMS students is coming up very soon, on Feb. 2nd. Please sign up to be part of the screening team here.
This is a really important event because the ages of 11-14 are the prime time for identification of Scoliosis of the spine. Early detection and treatment are the keys to reversing Scoliosis so it is not a life-long problem. Fulton County nurses run the event, but every year we need parent volunteers to be the "first eyes." Parent Screeners act as primary checkers to make the process move smoothly and quickly for the students. With this important event only 3 weeks away, the PTSA is in desperate need of Scoliosis Screeners for a 3 1/2 hour window on Feb. 2nd from 11:45 am to 3:00 pm. Please see the SignupGenius below if you can sign up as a volunteer. Bonus: We will feed you lunch, snacks, and coffee during the day!
If you were certified last year through the Training Course, you DO NOT NEED to take it again. However, if you have not taken the training course within the last 18 months, you will NEED to attend -- it is a painless 1 1/2 hours on Jan 24th, and then you will be certified for 2 years. Please consider volunteering your time for this very worthwhile service event that EPMS provides to its students. Please, direct questions to Jennifer Rodman: jcrodman@yahoo.com
