Can you relate?
"No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship."
Dr. James Comer
The research is plentiful to support Dr. Comer's quote. So what is a significant relationship?...A significant relationship is a respectful relationship. A significant relationship doesn't mean becoming the student's buddy. It means that teachers both insist on high-quality work and offer support.
Next rhetorical question: Have you ever been in any relationship that didn't take some work and effort? I am guessing the answer is no. That being said, why would we assume building relationships with our students would be any different? Are these relationships less valuable than those other ones we work so hard on...different maybe...but less valuable? What could be more valuable than building a relationship with the future. That is what our students are...the future. So how do we do it? Comer's research revealed these actions that teens themselves identified as keys to knowing a teacher cared for them enough to build a relationship:
- The teacher calls me by my name.
- The teacher answers my questions.
- The teacher talks to me respectfully.
- The teacher notices me and says "Hi."
- The teacher helps me when I need help.
Now that is not to say that everything is unicorns and rainbows, but as I stated earlier, any relationship worth having takes work. So the question is, are relationships with our future worth having? I know the answer from our PHS staff is a resounding yes, and for that, I thank you!
