Wrapping up 1st Semester
Report Cards will be accessible to parents through Power School on Friday, January 28. We will send a separate email with directions for logging in to view your child's report card.
After a long winter break, all students participated in our DES Expectation Reboot. Classes attended sessions in every area of the buildings to review expected behaviors which we call the 3 R's: Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn.
Next Steps in PWSSD Visioning Process
We will hold at least one in person session at DES in February or early March, as well as at least one virtual option. In addition to the sessions hosted by each school site, there will be several community sessions as well. Stay tuned for those dates and additional information in the coming weeks!
DES Makerspace is OPEN
Thank you to DPC and all of you for your fundraising efforts that made this space possible. We are thrilled to have the space open and cannot wait to see what kids will do in the coming months and years!
January Music Room Update
Happy New Year from the Music Room! We are happy to be back and school beginning new units of study in each grade level. Here is what students are working on for the month of January:
4th Grade is learning how to read notes on the lines and spaces of the Treble Clef Staff in preparation for their upcoming Recorder Unit. Recorders have been ordered and should arrive for the students to begin practicing in a few weeks.
3rd Grade is beginning their Ukulele Unit. They will be learning the parts of the instruments, naming the four strings, and a few basic chords that will enable them to play along to many traditional and popular songs!
2nd Grade is practicing proper technique and procedures for playing our classroom instruments such as the xylophone, glockenspiel, metallophone and drums. Soon we will be able to accompany our singing with a steady beat as well as different rhythm patterns.
1st Grade is learning about the musical story, Peter and the Wolf, where each character is represented by a different instrument of the symphony orchestra. Ask them if they can describe the music that goes with each of the seven characters in the story!
Kindergarten continues to sing, dance and play by learning snow songs as well as continuing our letter songs. This month we will be learning songs for the letters E (Ellie Elephant), F (Fin the Fish), O (Ollie Otter) and P (Perky Penguin).

Inclement Weather Update
This year’s calendar will allow PWSSD to have one inclement weather day that will not require any make-up time with students. In order to stay on track with instructional requirements and to stay compliant with DPIs requirements around student contact time, any additional inclement weather days beyond the first one will result in virtual learning days in grades K-12.
Below is a schedule for our virtual school day, if we should need to use one. If a virtual learning day is necessary due to severe weather, classroom teachers will provide a detailed learning schedule to parents via email and will work with students via Google Meet during instructional times. Recess and lunch will be common for all students at DES.
8:45 A.M. Start Time
9:45 A.M - 10:15 A.M Common Break Time/Recess
11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. Common Lunch/Recess Time
We will be providing instruction in reading, writing, math, phonics and one specials class
Breaks will be given frequently throughout the day for students to transition or regroup (as determined by their teacher) or to complete independent work
Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals will be providing instructional assistance to their students virtually
