Hybrid Learning: Continues!

Week of 11/2

Dear CST Family,

Having just completed the 2nd full week of hybrid learning our students have been back for 5 full days in person. While at home, students are adjusting to the need to manage their time at home. As a reminder, on hybrid days home, students check in with their Cat teacher in the morning, hear announcements, and will complete lessons on their own during the day. This operates much like our remote learning days. Students are doing well and showing more comfort with the learning model at the end of the second week, but please reach out if we can be of any support. This leads into a big announcement for students...

Wildcat After Hours (WAH) and Math Lab are BACK!!! Monday through Thursday there will be after school opportunities for our students to catch up on work and/or get help on understanding. WAH is offered Monday - Thursday and Math Lab 2 days a week (depending on grade). Please reach out to your child's math or Cat teacher with questions--more details below in the newsletter.

Finally, it's a big week locally and nationally as we celebrate election day on Tuesday, November 3rd. Our students, on Monday and Tuesday, will participate in a mock election in their social studies classes. Social studies teachers will share about the voting process, the ballot (includes national, state, and judge races), and pass out an "I voted" sticker for those who choose to vote. This is not a required activity, which is all part of the voting discussion, but is a real life application of our students' curriculum, especially our 8th grade American History curriculum. Now is a prime time for students to learn about the political process and its candidates. The voting opportunity at CST is the same that is given to all Olathe Schools with results expected by Wednesday morning. Feel free to reach out to your child's social studies teacher with questions about the mock election. Also, feel free to review the actual ballot here in JoCo with your child before they return next week.

I wish you all a wonderful and safe weekend and a great week ahead!

Rick

Traffic Pattern

Please use a "zipper merge" when turning in off of 159th and entering into our drop off and pick up lanes so that we can maximize the full extent of all pick-up lanes. This will help reduce back-up onto 159th street.

Thank you for following our traffic pattern in effort to promote student safety and efficiency.

COVID Gradebook Weighting

With the shortened number of class meeting dates in the first quarter, quarter one and quarter two will be weighted differently when determining semester grades. At the end of the semester, the semester grade on the grade card will reflect a quarter one weighting of 40% and quarter two weighting of 60%. This will allow students an opportunity to recover their semester grade after a shortened quarter one and be a fair representation of learning for the full semester. The current expectation is that second semester will be back to a 50/50 weighting, as in the past. This is approach is consistent across all 10 Olathe middle schools.

EXCITING NEWS!!!!

Chisholm Trail, Mission Trail and California Trail middle schools each raised enough funds last year to build a well together! Our names will be on it! Water for South Sudan will allow our Olathe schools to unite on one well. Pretty amazing to think about the difference our students are going to make in people’s lives!

Science Olympiad

Email from District Administration (10/26)

Olathe Public Schools parents,

As students and staff settle into the second quarter, we have one item to be completed by all families and one item for consideration by families. The first item, KSDE Parent Assurances, is required for all parents to complete and the second item regarding Learning Environment Changes for Second Semester is optional.

KSDE Parent Assurances (REQUIRED)

A requirement of the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is that all school districts in the state ask parents to acknowledge three assurances related to the learning models offered this school year. The assurances parents are asked to acknowledge are:

  1. I understand that my children may need additional support to complete assigned work, and to the best of our ability, our family will provide supervision during the learning process.
    b. I agree that my child(ren) are expected to be available to communicate with teaching staff on a regular basis as outlined by the school district.
    c. If a student is unable to participate on any given day (illness or doctor appointment), I will notify the school by telephone to report absence.

These assurances are designed to provide clear communication and expectations for parents whose children may participate in various learning models for the 2020-2021 school year. To complete this task that has been required of school districts, parents may click here: https://onbase.olatheschools.com/forms/parent_assurances.html

Learning Environment Change for Second Semester (OPTIONAL)

At the start of the school year, we asked parents to choose the learning environment for their child(ren) for the first semester. At that time we shared that there would be an opportunity for parents to change the learning environment for their child(ren) for second semester. Parents interested in changing their child’s learning environment for second semester beginning January 2021 may do so between Oct. 26 and Nov. 6 at this link: https://onbase.olatheschools.com/forms/remote_learning_selection.html

Parents may change their child’s learning mode from in-person to remote or from remote to in-person. During the first semester, there was some flexibility provided in terms of changing learning mode given the changes that were made after the registration period ended. Because of staffing challenges and changes that will be needed to accommodate those choosing to change learning modes for second semester, there will not be flexibility in changing once the window closes on November 6. Please give careful consideration to the needs and learning mode that will best suit you and your child(ren) for the rest of the year knowing that the decision is a commitment through May of 2021.

This learning environment changes will go into effect when second semester begins on Jan. 6. Parents will need to have their child’s student ID number to complete the electronic request at the link above. Please note this is optional and only parents who want to make a change from in-person to remote or from remote to in-person should fill out this form. Parents who want to continue with the same learning environment DO NOT need to fill out this form.

If you are unsure of your student’s ID number, you can locate it in ParentVUE by going to Student Info. This form will be available from Oct. 26- Nov. 6.

"NURSE UPDATE"

The Johnson County Health Department has identified the following as primary or secondary symptoms of COVID 19 in middle school aged children:

Primary Symptoms:

• New cough

• Difficulty breathing

• Loss of taste or smell

• Fever greater than 100 degrees

Secondary Symptoms:

• Extreme fatigue

• Congestion/runny nose

• Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea

• Sore throat

• Headache

• Muscle or body aches

Students who have one primary symptom or two or more of either primary or secondary symptoms will be excluded from school pending medical evaluation in accordance with Johnson County Health Department guidance and Olathe District Schools policy.

If your child has met these criteria. Please contact your health care provider or the health department to determine your student’s need for testing or other medical evaluation.

Your student may return to school when:

• they have been tested for COVID-19 and have a negative result*.

OR

• it has been ten days since the onset of their symptoms and they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours and they have significant improvement in their symptoms.

OR

• your doctor gives written clearance to return to school stating that your child has been evaluated and does not have COVID-19 or has been diagnosed with a non-contagious condition such as allergies.

*The Olathe School District will no longer accept "Rapid Antigen" Covid tests because of the high false negative rate. The district will only accept PCR Covid test results.

Thank you for your attention to this important health matter. Please contact your school nurse with any questions.

Note from Nurse Ross to Students!

Hello Wildcats! Here are some tips to help us stay healthy at school!

You need to wear your mask over your nose and mouth while you are inside. Please don’t play with it or touch it. No masks with vents or valves are allowed. "Gaiter" masks must be double layered.

Make sure to cover your cough or sneeze, and afterward make sure to wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands. Make sure to briskly rub your hands together until they are dry. Wash or sanitize your hands throughout the day.

Please bring your water bottle every day. It is important to stay hydrated. There are places in the building where you can refill your water bottle. You can briefly pull down your mask to drink from your water bottle. Pull it back up over your nose and mouth after you drink.

We would like for you to take care of your needs in the classroom as much as possible. To enable you to do this, we recommend that each student carries a small hygiene kit in their backpack. Items to include in this bag could be lip balm, Kleenex, feminine products, lotion, contact solution, band-aids, extra masks, cough drops, a small bottle of Tylenol or Ibuprofen in the original containers. These items are not to be shared with others. Please tell your parents if you use your supplies and restock your kit at home.

Make sure to tell your parents if you feel sick and stay home from school. It is important to let the school know if you have been around someone who has tested positive for COVID. If you feel sick at school, tell your teacher who will notify the nurse if needed.

By using these tips, we can all stay healthy.

Let’s have a great year!

CST Bell Schedule--Hybrid/In-Person

Below is the bell schedule. Please note 6th grade will have an alternate 4th and 5th hour to accommodate 2 extra lunches. Remote students will also follow this bell schedule. Teachers will communicate with their students when lunch will occur.
