A Note From the Principal

Good Morning River Hawk Families,

I hope your weekend is off to a great start! Things are moving along quickly and we are back in full swing. With February and Valentine's Day around the corner, be sure to read information below on ASB's sale of Valentine Grams and how parents can send one to their student!

This Monday, I am addressing our students on RioTV about River Hawk behavior in our community as they walk home or to their ride. While overall there is only a small percentage of our River Hawks behaving in an inappropriate or disrespectful manner, it affects our school community's reputation. This specifically came to a head this past week as we received calls and emails about student behavior in the newly renovated park behind us, where little eyes watched some of our students not setting the best example, with one even throwing a glass bottle down to make it shatter. While they are still kids, too, and kids don't always make the best choices in front of their peers, our River Hawks are really amazing people and I want our community and other parents to see the best of our River Hawks.

In my address, I am calling our students to action in using riotip@hartdistrict.org to report those they see and what they've done so we can intervene, educate, and get students to reflect on their choices and encourage them to show the best of who they are. While the episode will not post until Monday morning, I encourage you to WATCH RioTV HERE on Monday so you can have an open conversation with your student and help them with how they can handle things when they see something they know is not right. Consider also giving them strategies on what to do if it's their own friend making an unwise choice and share how you expect them to behave when you are not around. Parenting is hard and while we all hope our kids are always on their best behavior, myself included, their peers can be strong influences and they will make mistakes. Talking about it ahead of time and giving them tools might help them one day when they find they're in an uncomfortable situation. I am grateful for your partnership!
