Elkhorn South High School
April Newsletter 2019-2020
From the Principal - Mark Kalvoda
Dear EHS/ESHS Families,
As we continue to navigate our current closure guidelines, questions regarding prom and
graduation continually come up as top-of-mind discussion points. We understand the
importance of these events in the lives of our students and want to assure you that the
conversations we are having about our ability to continue them as planned are not being takenlightly.
Per the current Directive Health Measure from the Nebraska Department of Health and HumanServices, gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited until at least April 30th. Given thatour prom date of April 18th falls prior to that deadline, district administrators agree that thenecessary course of action is to cancel prom. We understand the disappointment this will cause
for our students and all those who have worked tirelessly to plan this special event. However,
we must remember that this is in the best interest of protecting the health and safety of our
students, faculty, families, and our community at large. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all
who have dedicated their time, talent, and treasure to planning for prom, especially the Junior
Class Officers and parents of the Post Prom Committee.
At this time, plans for our Class of 2020 Graduation Ceremony remain as previously scheduled
for Sunday, May 17, 2020. However, as we have seen in recent weeks, the circumstances
surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are rapidly changing and health experts have stated that
large gatherings are unlikely through at least May. Knowing that we need to continue to remain
flexible, we are committing to the following responses:
- On Friday, May 1, 2020, an email will be sent informing of plans to hold the ceremony as
previously scheduled or confirming a reschedule date of Sunday, June 14, 2020.
- On Monday, June 1, 2020, an email will be sent informing of plans to hold the ceremony
as previously scheduled or confirming a reschedule date of Sunday, July 26, 2020.
- On Friday, July 10, 2020, an email will be sent informing of plans to hold the ceremony
as previously scheduled or cancel the ceremony if needed.
Additionally, the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation Senior Scholarship Breakfasts are currently
scheduled prior to the April 30th regulation deadline and will need to be rescheduled. The
ESHS Senior Scholarship Breakfast will now be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 and the
EHS Senior Scholarship Breakfast will be held Thursday, May 14, 2020. If the graduation
ceremony requires a reschedule to June or July, Senior Scholarship Breakfasts will be held on
the Wednesday (ESHS) and Thursday (EHS) before the Sunday graduation ceremony.
Event start times for any rescheduled events will remain as follows:
- Elkhorn South High School Scholarship Breakfast: 7:00 AM
- Elkhorn High School Scholarship Breakfast: 7:00 AM
- Elkhorn High School Graduation Ceremony: 1:30 PM
- Elkhorn South High School Graduation Ceremony: 4:00 PM
Please know, we understand and value the importance of this milestone for our students and
their families, and we will continue to do all that we can to make it a reality while prioritizing the
health and safety of all involved.

Senior Class Board Legacy Scholarship
Dear Elkhorn South Parents,
The Senior Class of 2019 created a scholarship known as the Senior Class Board Legacy Scholarship. The goal of this award is to recognize an Elkhorn South senior who represents our school’s values. The senior chosen will be resilient, creative, kind, hard-working, compassionate, thoughtful, ambitious, as well as involved in the activities of Elkhorn South. It is exciting that the 2020 Senior Class Board has decided to continue the Legacy Scholarship and is trying to increase the scholarship size (it has been $500 and we would like to make it $1000 per student).
Please consider donating by following this LINK TO DONATE ONLINE or checks can be made out to the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation. Please write “Senior Class Board Scholarship” in the memo of your check. All cash and checks can be given to Kristi Costello in the front office of Elkhorn South and will be forwarded to the Foundation.
We need your help to support this scholarship and the nominee that will be chosen to receive it! These donations will make a huge difference for a deserving student. Most seniors are in need of financial aid, and as seniors ourselves, we believe that this is a way to not only help a fellow student but acknowledge their character.
Since the Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation is administering the payment of the scholarship on behalf of the Elkhorn South Senior Board, each donation may be tax deductible. (consult your tax advisor) The Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation (Tax ID #36-3226778) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
We are extremely thankful for you taking the time to read about this the Senior Class Legacy Scholarship.
Sincerely,
The Elkhorn South Senior Class Board
