Moving Along with Mrs. Maddox
Dear Jaguar Families,
Birthdays have always been a big deal at the Maddox house. Not with presents and parties, but with special menus for dinner and what we refer to as “birthday trivia”. If it’s your birthday, there will be at least 10 questions about “you” and your life that the entire family must answer. I am usually the one that writes the questions for everyone except when it is my birthday, then it is more of a collaborative family effort. As we have all gotten older, the questions have become more and more entertaining. We usually answer these questions at family dinner, and the conversation evolves into laughter as we reminisce and relive funny moments of the birthday person’s life. I think my favorite part of this tradition is that we usually end up laughing and joking about times in our lives that were pretty big "mess ups” or when things did not go according to “plan” and that person had to pivot or ad lib. It gives everyone an opportunity to reflect, laugh, and grow from past mistakes, which is where real growth and learning takes place.
In the month of March we will be working on the virtue of Fortitude. Fortitude is the virtue that helps us push through tough times with firmness and consistency in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens our coping skills and helps us resist temptations that create obstacles in our lives. The virtue of fortitude helps us to conquer our fears and to face trials and persecutions. This is the virtue that creates superheroes!!! My favorite quote comes from Jim Fay, a well-known author, and presenter in the fields of parenting, positive discipline, and classroom management. He reminds parents in his infamous book Love and Logic, “If you rob them of the struggle, you steal their strength.” Boom!!! There it is. The best well phrased statement for all parents. The struggle is where the growth happens!!!
Next week two big things will happen. Lent will begin and I will turn 50. I’m not going to lie, that is a big number to me, I’m trying not to care, but I do. I’m looking forward to my birthday trivia, the moment when my children roast me and tell me how I failed as a mom. I will laugh with them and let it happen because I know it’s all true. Most of us have experienced a false start right out of the gate, a few hundred times. However, in my “old age” I have come to realize, that’s okay, this is where seeds of fortitude are planted, and sainthood begins. Students will have a dress down day on Tuesday, March 1st. They can wear jeans or joggers, and birthday treats will be passed out to help celebrate my half-century as a believer and follower of Christ. I am so blessed to be a mother, wife, and educator. Being “Fully Present” with each of our students and teachers this year has been such a privilege, let’s celebrate!
With a Grateful Heart,
