A Message from the Principal
As I sit down to write the monthly message, I am once again sitting in disbelief that another month has gone by. We are officially in the 4th quarter. Lots of learning and hard work ahead for the last 9 weeks, but the hard work will be worth it! March was an amazing month. We had volunteers from Aurora come and read to the kids at the beginning of March and we ended with a double eliminated dodgeball tournament. And of course there was lots of learning that took place in between!!
If you have not signed up for summer learning, please consider doing so. Summer learning provides an excellent opportunity for students to continue growing, have fun and stay engaged. There are bussing options, many classes to choose from, and breakfast and lunch will be served.
With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we have already been preparing for the 2017-18 school year. On that note, I thought it would be beneficial to state the expectations for teacher requests. Due to the amazing group of dedicated teachers we have at Garfield, I fully believe that all students will have a great education. However, should there be an educational reason you feel it best to have specific teacher, you must state your request in writing to me and include the educational reason. For a request to be considered it must come in by May 31st.
I would like to thank everyone for the support during the Forward Exam. Our 3rd and 4th grade students were focused and gave 100%. The results truly are a home & school effort. The support you provide from home like making sure they had a good breakfast, a good night sleep, and giving them some encouraging words as they leave are all key pieces for good results. Thank you! Your support is always appreciated.

Character Word for March--------COURAGE------- Leslie Nemmers
Courage is the ability to face danger or difficult situations in life. A courageous person overcomes weakness and hardships despite being fearful. Courage is often associated with heroism, bravery and fortitude. Courage also implies firmness in mind and will in the face of danger.
It gives us strength to accomplish difficult tasks and helps us to do the right thing even when we are scared or frightened. Courage comes from the heart and allows us to be persistent and strong. It also takes courage to trust someone enough to share the truth. Sometimes the truth can hurt. However, in order to practice trust, honesty, forgiveness, or any other virtue, a person must have courage.
What does courage mean? Doing the right thing even when it is difficult. Facing your fears with confidence - being brave.
Below are some pictures and videos from the assembly.
What are some ways you can promote courage in your household? Stress the importance of doing the right thing, even if others are not. Deal with daily challenges head on. Be willing to try new things, even if you fail. Admit your mistakes, and try to learn from them. Talk about how it takes courage to do many things in life, like making new friends, standing up for someone being bullied, and being yourself.
4th grade teaches the school to show courage!
