NJHS Valentine Candy Sales Help Needed
NJHS is looking for parent volunteers to help with Valentine's Day candy sales on February 11, 12 and 13 during all three lunch periods. Volunteers will provide "cards" for students to fill out to indicate who they would like to send their candy to, and will take money. Volunteers will not be responsible for actually delivering candy. Students in NJHS have signed up to help during 7th and 8th grade lunches, but will not be available to help during 6th grade lunch. Although it would be helpful to have the same people for 8th and 6th grade lunch, it is not required that volunteers do both. The NJHS sponsor, Heidi Johnson, will come down during 8th grade lunch to help volunteers get set up and started each day, and can also come down during 7th grade lunch if needed. If you would like to do multiple lunches on the same day, please put your name down separately in each space.

During Empower this week, all of our SMS students worked on building a more positive community in their Empower class and at SMS. We defined “community” and created a list of qualities that make up a positive community. We took some Lessons from the Geese (flying in a V formation) and compared it to positive and successful communities. Each class worked on building a safe and connected community through games and activities, which gave students opportunities to be active listeners and to show respect and empathy toward their classmates by being mindful of their uniqueness, viewpoints, and feelings. The “Don’t Put People in Boxes” activity moved many students and teachers as we broke down walls of differences and found common ground among our community members.
SMS Digital Citizenship
SMS Digital Citizenship
Over the last few weeks, SMS Hawks, students and teachers alike, have participated in discussion regarding digital citizenship and online behaviors. 6th graders talked about digital drama, and discussed strategies to de-escalate digital drama when it occurs. 7th graders had great discussions about managing their digital footprints, and they even Googled themselves! 8th graders participated in lively discussions regarding digital activism, and researched successful hashtag campaigns. Teachers and staff joined in on the fun, with a staff meeting devoted to site/app usage, and the protection of student data.
We at SMS are devoted to teaching kids how to balance technology and device usage, and promote healthy and safe ways to use the Internet. Here are some resources for parents and families regarding online behavior and student safety:
