Medication Update

Dear RCPS middle and high school parents,

Over the last few weeks, we have had a number of conversations with the VA Dept. of Health regarding over-the-counter (OTC) medications being given to students at school. Although we understand the convenience of schools purchasing a supply of OTC medications such as Tylenol or Tums and then providing them to students with written parent permission, updated VDH and DOE regulations for nurses do not permit this practice. We are considering a number of options that may achieve the appropriate combination of convenience and adherence to state guidelines, but in the meantime, families will need to adhere to the following protocol as outlined on the parent permission form:

1. Parent/Guardian must bring over-the-counter medication to school in the original pharmaceutical package with student’s name on
the bottle.
2. Parent/Guardian must provide the school with a completed medication authorization/parental consent form.

The medication authorization form is attached for your convenience. Please reach out to your school with further questions.

Oskar Scheikl
RCPS Superintendent

Bus Notes

If your student makes plans to ride the bus with another student at any time, we need to hear from both families for approval before a bus pass is given out. Families can either call the school at 540-879-2535, email the school at, or your student can bring in a note to the front office.

Pence Students Working Together

7th graders in Mrs. Crawford’s classes also participated in a Get to Know you Hexagonal Thinking activity. The decorated hexagons with categories of Favorite Books, Movies, places to visit, Subject, and Activities. After their hexagon was decorated, they put them together as teams to form a puzzle of things they have similar. This showed them how they are connected like a family and community.

School Attendance Information!

It's as simple as this: Good school attendance correlates to student success!

Parents, we are asking you to partner with us to help regularly get your students to school. In short, attendance matters! That said, we realize that there are times when your student(s) may need to be out.

-If your student is absent or running late please call the school (879-2535) or email the school ( before 9:00 AM.

Please try to schedule all vacations around the school calendar. We have seen an increased number of parents pulling their students out of school for vacations over the last year. While family time is valuable, missing an extended amount of time from school leads to student frustration and anxiety as they fall behind on missed concepts. If you plan to take a vacation, requests must be submitted to Ms. Ray or Ms. Shank at least ten school days in advance. Students will be responsible for making up any missed work.

While good attendance is vital to your student's success, we are reminded that we are still in a pandemic. If your child displays any signs or symptoms of an illness, please keep them at home. Please review the RCPS safety plan if you have questions.

Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Pick-Up

Wilbur Pence is a community school located in the town of Dayton. We are appreciative of our partnership with the town. With our building and grounds located in the town and over 700 students arriving and leaving school in a short window, we ask for your cooperation regarding morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up procedures.

Remember, please do not block entrances or streets along Ashby Street while waiting in the pickup line.

-Morning drop-off may not occur prior to 8:00 AM. If you arrive sooner, please have your student wait in the car until prompted by a school staff member.

-Students may exit the car along the sidewalk area in front of the school, allowing us to have as many as 6-7 students exits at once.

-We ask that all families dropping off their student(s) approach the school from the south along Ashby Street. In working with the Dayton Police Department, we have identified that this is the safest way to practice and prevents traffic backups along Bowman Rd.

-Please move forward with traffic to keep our traffic flowing.

-Please see the map below.

-In the afternoon, the procedures will be the reverse of the morning, with students loading into their cars anywhere along the sidewalk. We again ask that you approach the school from the south along Ashby Street.

-All cars will need to turn right out of the school onto Bowman road as they exit the school.

-While our dismissal bell is scheduled to ring at 3:18 PM each day, we may hold the bell if buses are late to arrive at Pence to ensure the safety of our students.
