Hello Birmingham Bears!
3rd and 4th Graders will be taking STAAR next Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th. Here are a few tips to remember so that your body and mind are ready!
* Go to bed at a decent time so that your body feels well rested for the day. 8 ½ to 11 hours is recommended. Try winding down 30 minutes before your bedtime. Use this time to read a book together with your family or reflect on your day.
* Eat a good breakfast that contains a good source of proteins and complex carbohydrates. Some good examples are eggs, nuts, dairy, fruit, and whole wheat breads or cereals. Try your best to avoid sugary foods, like donuts, on testing day. The cafeteria serves breakfast between 7:00-7:30 am if you are not able to eat breakfast at home.
* Get up in time to be able to eat a good breakfast and relax before coming to school. Set out your clothes the night before, pack your lunch, and know what you will be eating for breakfast. Being rushed in the morning does not start our day off in the right direction.
* Have a positive attitude! Tell yourself you can do it! Remember to use the “GET TO” part of your brain that we discussed in guidance class! If you get nervous, set your pencil down and go on your mental vacation that we discussed in guidance. Taking slow deep breathes and thinking positively will help you relax and get your mind back on trak.
* Take a deep breath and relax! You will do fabulous!!

Nurse Abby...
Happy May!
All medication must be picked up from the clinic by Thursday, May 24th at 12:30pm. Medication will not be sent home in a backpack, unless prior arrangements have been made. I cannot put controlled substances in backpacks, they must be picked up. Please stop by the clinic during normal school hours anytime to pick up the medication. Any medication left in the clinic after May 24th will be destroyed. Please contact me by email or phone for specific arrangements that need to be made.
It has been a great first school year for me, and I have enjoyed building a relationship with your child.

From the Library…
Attention parents.... We need to get those books turned in.
- Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade should already have all of their books turned in or paid for.
- 3rd and 4th grade should turn theirs in right after STAAR testing on May 15th. Make sure your student has their books with them on STAAR testing days.
If you have lost or have damaged books you can cover that cost 2 ways:
- Send exact change or check made out to "Birmingham Elementary"
- Bring some of the following items in to cover the cost of the book(s)
Bring canned goods to be donated to Christian Care Center: $2.00 off per can
Bring canned dog/cat food to be donated to Wylie Animal Shelter: $2.00 off per can
If books are not returned or paid for, your child will be not be able to check out books at the beginning of next year. Please make payment for books owed or bring the exchange items and turn them in as quickly as possible. We want all students to start the year with a clear record so they can enjoy using the library and checking out books.
Thank you and have a fabulous weekend!
Mrs. April
