2A Classroom Update 8
Home of the Golden Lions
January 15, 2016
Dear Families,
Happy New Year!
We hope you all enjoyed the holiday break whether you traveled or rested and relaxed at home. We missed our 2A Golden Lions and were happy to have them back for an action packed 2 weeks! Like Bruno said during a closing circle, "Shout out to 2A because we did a great job coming back from a long break."
First and foremost, thank you all so much for making our Narrative Publishing Party such a success! The Golden Lions worked really hard on their pieces and were excited to share them with friends and family. We appreciate your continued support and thank you for helping 2A start 2016 with a bang. On a scale of 0 to a 100, that publishing party was definitely 1,000,000!
In reading and writing, we've turned our focus to informational text. We've started by thinking about what informational texts are and the text features that are often found in them. We looked at all kinds of nonfiction books and even worked together as a class to write our own informational text about 2A.
In math, we started a new unit with a focus on adding and subtracting numbers within 200 more fluently and solving word problems. We've been playing a game called "Show-Me" and students practiced adding and subtracting by making one of the numbers a multiple of 10 to make it easier to solve. We also learned a new thinking process called U.P.S.C. or "Understand, make a plan, solve, and check." Though the process is new, students are working hard to think about how they approach solving word problems and the thinking process they go through from the beginning to the end.
In Inquiry we began our unit on Communication. We are focusing on signs and symbols. We went on a neighborhood walk to observe the signs and symbols we pass by everyday and think about their meaning and purpose.
Here's to an amazing start to 2016!
Enjoy your weekend,

Golden Lion of the Week
Owen was the Co-Golden Lion of the Week for the Week of December 18th. Here are some of the reasons his classmates nominated him:
-"Me and another student were playing with Owen and we were fighting. He helped us figure out the problem."
-He is curious about others."
Violet was the Co-Golden Lion of the Week for the Week of December 18th. Here are some of the reasons her classmates nominated her:
-"In writing she took her partner's feedback and didn't say "No!"
-When a student was sharing what she did on the weekend Violet put her hand up right away to ask a question! Violet wanted to learn about the student's culture and herself!"
-"She wants to play with different people."

Spanish with Ms. Rosado
¡Me gusta mucho 2A! This new term we are getting ready to share our experience of México through postcards. Yeah! But before that, we need to practice our writing. We are working really hard to share our likes and dislikes in Spanish. Me gusta correr, pero no me gusta nadar. (I like to run, but I don´t like to swim.) We love to play the me gusta game in the classroom.
Keep practicing at home.
Ps,
On January 6 we celebrated El día de los Reyes Magos, a very important holiday in México (and other Spanish-speaking countries). We were so lucky to share this tradition with Diogo’s Mom with a Big Rosca! ¡Gracias Mamá de Diogo!
Gracias,
Ms, Rosado
