Manitou Springs Middle School
Friday, March 3rd, 2023
Dear Middle School Families,
We had a great week of learning and fun at the middle school. Our 8th graders visited the high school to learn more about opportunities at MSHS. Next week, high school counselors will be meeting with our 8th graders during advisory to tell them about course offerings for 9th grade.
The end of 3rd quarter is Friday, March 10th. This is a great time to check in with your child about their grades. We have after school homework help on Wednesdays for any students who might need additional support. Please email me if you would like to learn more about this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Mr. Cady
Principal, MSMS

Forensics:
The MSMS team did great in this last tournament of the season. Jazz Campbell won a first place for creative storytelling, and a third place in interpretation of comedy. Vincent Scharer won a second place in extemporaneous speech and a fourth place in original oratory. Annya Vasquez won a 4 th place in poetry. Ten teams from Southern Colorado competed, and it was my 40th and last forensics tournament in my career. All of the rest of the team came close to competing in the final rounds. We had a lot of fun altogether!
Music Jam!
but we have 4 guitars, two keyboards, drums, percussion, and multiple amps available. At jam, we go around in a circle taking turns suggesting
songs, and Mr. J helps the group arrange the song and is prepared to give students resources to help them practice their instrument at home.
You are not required to sign up or stay for the entire jam-hope to see you there :)

6th Grade Snack Sign-up:
6th graders eat lunch early, at 10:05am, so they tend to be hungry towards the end of the day. PAC is helping organize snacks for the 6th graders so they can focus on their afternoon classes. The big boxes of snacks they sell at Costco or Sam's are perfect. Please consider signing up HERE.

BOTS AND BOTNET:
WHAT ARE BOTS AND BOTNETS?
There’s no question that the internet is awesome; it makes our lives easier and connect us to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, there are bad guys out there who harness that convenience to do harm. One of the common types of cybercrime infects connected devices with specific types of malware, turning them into what are known as bots.
Once a device becomes a bot, it is usually part of a botnet – a larger network of other infected devices that are all controlled remotely by hackers. Cybercriminals use bots for financial gain or to steal, send spam to infect more devices or attack websites. A botnet can have anywhere from a few hundred to many thousand devices at its disposal.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Help protect yourself and others against bots and other malicious attacks by following these tips.
- Keep a clean machine
Having the latest security software, web browser and operating system is the best defense against viruses, malware and other online threats.
- Back it up
Protect your valuable work, music, photos and other digital information by regularly making an electronic copy and storing it safely.
- Make better passwords
A strong password is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember.
- When in doubt, throw it out
Links in email, social media posts and online advertising are often how cybercriminals try to steal your personal information. Even if you know the source, if something looks suspicious, delete it.
- Plug & scan
USBs and other external devices can be infected by viruses and malware. Use your security software to scan them.
