Meet the Granville Academy Team 2019 - 2020
Mr. William Graham: Principal
Mr. Graham is very excited to be a part of the Granville Academy Team!
He is a veteran teacher, coach and administrator having served many years in Durham, as well as Granville County. He is honored to be following Dr. Wrenn as the leader of this extraordinary program. Mr. Graham received his undergraduate degree from Miami (Ohio) and graduate degrees from Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. He is extremely grateful to be back in Granville County working with families in this unique opportunity. He feels truly privileged to work with such a fantastic staff of dedicated professionals. He looks forward to working collaboratively with everyone in this endeavor.
Mr. Graham is blessed to be married to a wonderful educator and amazing person. When not working on school activities, they enjoy running, biking, swimming and reading. Both love being outdoors and are also active with Disaster Relief efforts.
Mrs. Mary Warehime: Dean of Instruction
Mrs. Warehime was raised in the small town of Creedmoor, North Carolina by her parents, Tom and Kathy Weeks. She is the second of five children, with two older sisters and two younger brothers. She was fortunate enough to grow up on a farm, which included a never-ending supply of outdoor fun. Not many children grow up with room to roam and explore, but she had plenty of fields to run in and animals to play with. During her time in Granville County Schools, she attended Creedmoor Elementary, Mount Energy Elementary, G.C. Hawley Middle, and South Granville High School.
In May 2017, she graduated with her Masters of School Administration from UNCW. She is currently enrolled in the Ed.D Doctoral Program at UNCW with an anticipated graduation date of December 2020. She has been teaching English and Social Studies courses for grades 6-12 digitally and in-person since 2013. She was the Assistant Principal at Tar River Elementary for the 2018-2019 school year. During the 2019-2020 school year, she will serve students and staff at Granville Academy!
She believes that every child should read, write, think, and talk in every class, every day! It is an honor to serve the community that she knows and loves by teaching the next generation of youth in Granville County.

Mrs. Bethany Young: Middle School Science
She received her Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Science from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She received her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and a minor in Chemistry from there as well.
Her favorite thing to do is to get students excited about learning and doing science! She also enjoys coaching Science Olympiad to give students a chance to expand their scientific knowledge even further beyond the classroom.
Growing up on a farm, she has always had a love for the outdoors that has only increased as she has gotten older and one of her favorite places to be is the beach. She also enjoys hiking, running, reading, and painting.
Mrs. Kimberly Allison: Middle School Math
Mrs. Allison has been been a part of the GCPS family since 2007. She attended North Carolina Central University where she obtained her degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in science and math. In 2011 she was selected as a Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) fellow at North Carolina State University where she received her Master of School Administration degree.
Mrs. Allison describes herself as a lifelong learner who is constantly seeking opportunities to increase her knowledge base. Her primary purpose as an educator is to assist students in igniting their own passion for learning so that they can become independent thinkers and problem solvers!
On a personal note, she is married and has two children. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and reading. She is truly excited to be with Granville Academy.
Mr. Michael Spradlin: Middle School English and Social Studies
Before coming to Granville County in 2016 he worked for 5 years as an outdoor educator for the YMCA and other non-profits. He spent the majority of this time teaching group development, ecology and facilitating high ropes. This only increased his love for the outdoors. Some of his other interest include cooking, reading, board games and video games. During the fall and winter he enjoys spending time cheering for his Tarheels in both football and basketball.
Mrs. Lorie Jamison-Phillips: Elementary Teacher K-1
Mrs. Phillips is the K-1 Teacher for Granville Academy. She has been teaching in Granville County for over ten years. She has worked at Mt. Energy, Stovall-Shaw, and Tar River elementary schools.
She really enjoys working with the younger students. She finds it an amazing experience to watch five and six year olds learn how to read and write while also building confidence in their abilities.
Outside of school, Mrs. Phillips has been married to her husband for twenty-eight years and they have two adult children. Mrs. Phillips is a certified running coach and enjoys competing in local road races on the weekends. She also enjoys traveling to visit family in the northeast.
Mrs. Maryellen Bickel: Elementary Teacher 2-3
Mrs. Maryellen Bickel is the Granville Academy Elementary School Teacher for grades 2-3.
Mrs. Bickel has a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Providence College. She has 20 years of teaching experience. She has taught in 4 different states, the last 12 in North Carolina. She is married and the mother of 4 adult children and has 6 grandchildren.
Mrs. Bickel loves to travel, hike, and read. She is happy to be working at GA. She says, "Granville Academy is a wonderful school filled with amazing families."
Ms. Brenda Kellam: Elementary Teacher 4-5
Mrs. Kellam holds a BA is Psychology from Queens University of Charlotte. She is currently working towards another BA in Elementary Education through Western Governors University. She has 10 years of early childhood education experience teaching children from 1- 5 years old.
Mrs. Kellam is married with 2 furbabies. Outside of work, you can often find her spending time with her friends and family, trying new foods, or doing a plethora of different arts and crafts projects such as paper crafts, jewelry making, and wreath making. She also has a passion for technology and creating and designing things digitally.
Ms. Natalie Russell: Teacher Assistant
Mrs. Phyllis Cameron: Exceptional Children Teacher
Mrs. Cameron recently left public education for several years and spent that time along with her husband developing programs for a local system of food pantries in their capacity as coordinators. They also volunteer with Remote Area Medical, which provides free medical, dental, and vision services to underserved populations across the country. She loves to travel and was fortunate to travel with family aboard the National Geographic Explorer to Antarctica in January. In addition to travel, she enjoys crafting and reading.
Mrs. Mazie Marlin: High School Student Support
Mrs. Mazie Marlin earned her BS degree at Winston-Salem State University and MS from Indiana University. She had a total of 42 years of teaching experience before retiring from GCS in 2017. Currently, she works as lab facilitator for Granville Academy’s high school students.
Her mission is to ensure that the high school students know how to navigate the various learning management systems and are able to maintain academic success,
Mrs. Leah Powell: Digital Teaching & Learning Advisor
Mrs. Powell is a Digital Teaching & Learning Advisor that supports blended learning within the GA community. She is also a Granville Online & Granville Academy Spanish teacher.
She has worked for GCPS for a total of 13 years. She began her career as a Teacher Cadet and Spanish teacher at South Granville High School and for Granville Online. In 2015, Mrs. Powell joined the Technology Team as a district Instructional Technology Facilitator and continued to teach for Granville Online.
Mrs. Powell truly loves being apart of the Granville Academy community!
