Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter
What is going on?
Week of April 11th
Math: Students will begin preparing for the second grade district benchmark in math. We will be reviewing all concepts taught in math and learning about the genre of test taking. Students will learn to show all of their work (testing style) and then choose and circle the correct answer when given choices (seems easy but many forget to choose!). The next few days will be very important review days. Please make sure that your child will be in school on April 15th, 16th and 17th especially!
Reading: On Monday, students will continue to review for the Reading benchmark, which will be given on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, students will read tall tales, like Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill. Students will analyze, make inferences, and draw conclusions about theme and genre in these tall tales. Students will also learn about exaggerations that are tied to the actions and traits of the characters in the tall tales.
Writing: We are “Zooming in” on writing this week with our focus on Small Moment Writing (personal narratives). Students will learn to take a small moment from a special day or event, and stretch it out to write a vibrant, detailed story.
Science: This week students will measure, record, and graph weather information, including temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in order to identify patterns in the data. Students will also identify the importance of weather and seasonal information to make choices in clothing, activities, and transportation.
PBL: Thank you to all the parents for visiting our classroom on Friday for the gallery walk of our PBL presentations. The students loved having you here and we appreciate your support.
Tidbits From the Teacher
Thank you for all of the help with our Austin Zoo field trip last week!! It was a lot of fun trying to find animals that fit the list of our scavenger hunt.
We are trying to settle back into our normal routine now that our second PBL unit is over. We have just enough time to ready everyone for the district benchmarks in second grade reading/writing and math next week! Please don't plan on checking your child out of school for appointments or other activities on April 15th or 16th!
Things to Do/Remember: Please remember to initial each time your child completes his/her Xtramath for the day. This fact fluency is part of homework and children are expected to complete at least 3 assignments per week.
Please have children read 20 minutes nightly!
No homework this week! Thanks for making me feel appreciated last week!
Have fun with your family, but please still extra math and read!
