On Monday, January 17, 2022, our country celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As this is a day off of work and school for many, we get to choose our type of observance. Many families attend gatherings, listen to speakers, and watch parades in Dr. King's honor. The week prior and this past week in school, students learned about Martin Luther King Jr. through picture books, videos, and articles. He is best known for his "I Have a Dream" speech given in August of 1963, and instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawing discrimination.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”― Martin Luther King, Jr.

Do You Want To Build a Snowman?

Wednesday was the perfect day to have outside recess and play with the snow! The photos Mrs. Ollanketo, our Building Educational Attendant, took reminded me of one song in particular from the movie, Frozen. Temperatures hovered around 40 degrees as snow lined the playground. Students were creative in making snowmen:-) We even allowed snowball throwing at the big toy.

Most of our students made great choices with this snowball throwing opportunity. Kiddos stood on the blacktop and reached into the snow to make a snowball and aimed for part of the big toy, like the slide or a climbing bar. This worked out well for students wearing gloves and boots. You can see we have many students wearing boots on these these cold days in the photo above. Hands were warm and dry for those with waterproof mittens especially. Students with boots kept their toes toasty warm all afternoon. Thank you for sending your child dressed for the weather:-)

During the winter months, we will play outside at recess as often as possible. It is important for students to come with the appropriate hats, coats, and gloves. The following guidelines help us determine if recess will be indoors or outdoors (all temperatures include the wind chill effect): • 20 degrees or below – all recess will be indoors. • 21-25 degrees – students may be allowed one short (15 minutes) recess outdoors, with lunch recess indoors. • 26 degrees and warmer – all recess will be outdoors. For additional district winter weather procedures see the DCS website at this link.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our children safe!

Character Strong

To address social-emotional learning, the Dublin School District has secured a curriculum called Character Strong: Purposefull-People. Each month, our school will study a character trait. January focuses on KINDNESS. We hear announcements about kindness in the morning. At lunch once each week, students take time to share examples of how they use the trait in school and at home. In classrooms across the building, students take part in activities. We have quotes to discuss, pictures to notice, video clips to view, and books to enjoy related to the trait.

Families are welcome to visit the website to check out this resource. There are free resources including podcasts and weekly strategies to positively impact your daily work:-) Here are a few questions you could use to begin a conversation about KINDNESS at home.

  • What does Kindness look like in our home? What does it look like in our neighborhood?
  • What acts of Kindness have others shown you lately and how did you respond? How did it make you feel?
