SHARK SHOUTOUTS
- Shark Shoutout to all of the students in the SHORE Program. We were their 1st customers for ice cream sundaes. The students did a great job serving us! Thank you so much for the delicious ice cream and top notch service! -Ms. Jeannine and Ms. Kristi
- Many thanks to Candace Wolcott! When she saw my ankle was injured, she brought me a pair of crutches that afternoon! With the crutches' help, not only my ankle recovered so fast, but also, the secondary injury- lower back pain, caused by unbalanced walking was alleviated. Thank you, Candace! You are a beautiful angel! - Ms. Melinda Jones
- A HUGE shoutout to Ms. Ginnetty, Mr. Burke, and Mr. Bennett for taking care of the 8th grade while I was on maternity leave. I am so grateful to have had those months fully unplugged and spending time with my family, knowing everything was just fine at Monomoy. You're the best! -Mrs. Caitlyn Hall

Origin of Ad Lucem Award
At a Culture Committee meeting in 2015, Principal Bill Burkhead suggested that we establish Monomoy HS traditions. Teacher George Sowpel mentioned the idea of starting an Ad Lucem award, an award that would be based on what our district motto signifies. Teacher Lisa Forte Doyle added that the award be granted to those who spread the most light.
When Monomoy came together in 2012, the new district chose a lighthouse as its symbol to convey the mission of why we are here today: To be that beacon, that light - that not only guides and helps students on their journey but also to be that safe harbor against the raging storms and difficulties that life sometimes brings to all of us.
Teachers Bob Smeltzer and Rich Houston then proposed a Latin motto for the new district. Bob shared the idea with his 7th-grade daughter, Erin, and using Latin reference materials, she suggested Ad Lucem, toward the light, to complement the lighthouse theme and to reflect the values that we share as an educational community.
We trust this award reflects the essence of who we are as a school and community. The award recipients are selected by students, faculty, and staff. Ballots will be distributed this week.
Thank you
-MRHS Culture Committee
Peace Week: April 12th to April 16th
STAND for Human Rights is organizing Peace Week from April 12th to April 16th!
Our goal for Peace Week is to bring the school together by understanding, acknowledging, and celebrating our differences. We hope that Peace Week will show everyone that we are all a piece of what makes Monomoy so great.
We would like to include as many people, groups, and clubs as possible, so please spread the word and don't be afraid to get your peace on!
Key Club delivered St. Patrick’s Day cards to Liberty Commons
On March 16th, the day before St. Patrick’s Day, the MRHS Key Club officers delivered a total of 53 St. Patrick’s Day cards to Liberty Commons! Many seniors living at Liberty Commons could use some joy and festive cheer during the pandemic. The Key Club hopes that the cards they created helped to brighten the residents’ St. Patrick’s Day. Attached is a photo of the Key Club officers: Christie Beckley (President), Samantha Goode (Vice President), Caitlin Bouvier (Treasurer), and Sarah Poskanzer (Secretary). Thank you to everyone who made cards, and stay tuned for Key Club’s upcoming future projects!
Interact Club beach cleanup
Great job by the Monomoy Interact club at Red River Beach in Harwich. We did a beach clean-up day and some of the treasures we found were a broken, lobster pot and a cork in a bottle. At first glance, they thought they found a message in a bottle.
It was a beautiful day and we were happy that the beach was (for the most part) very clean. Featured in the picture are (left to right): Molly Gramm, Talia Perez, Yu Shang Zou, Sabrina Morand, Amalia Marjollet, Angelica Velasquez, Bridget Brochu, Luke Sanders, Ryan Casey, and Jonathan Coleman. Not pictured are Sally Watson and Yu Ying Zou. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers!
Sandscript is celebrating National Poetry Month
SANDSCRIPT, our school's Creative Writing Club, is celebrating NATIONAL POETRY MONTH with "Art & Poetry" posters displayed around the school building. Remember, one does not need to be a member of SANDSCRIPT to submit poems, stories, photos, or artwork to be published in our annual magazine which comes out in late May. Would you like your work published? Email Mrs. Forte-Doyle at lfortedoyle@monomoy.edu for more information or to submit work.
Here are two wonderful examples of our posters made by our Sandscript Editor, Olivia Appleton.
Key Club delivers filled Easter eggs to Monomoy Community Services!
On March 31st, the members of MRHS Key Club delivered 17 jumbo plastic eggs to Monomoy Community Services. The eggs were filled with Easter candy and confetti. They were delivered to the children as a special Easter treat, and the Key Club hopes that they brought some festive joy during this hard time! Attached is a photo of the Key Club officers (Christie Beckley, Samantha Goode, Sarah Poskanzer, and Caitlin Bouvier) along with two other members of Key Club (Forrester Belanger and Julian Belanger)! Thank you to everyone who brought in candy and helped to package the eggs! We’d like to also give a special thanks to Forrester and Julian, who came to deliver the eggs with the officers!
Massachusetts Letters About Literature Contest
Once again, sophomore students from Ms. Hofmann’s and Ms. Kelly’s ELA classes participated in the prestigious Massachusetts Letters About Literature Contest. The contest requires students to write letters to authors of books that had a profound impact on their lives, changing their view of the world or themselves. The letters went through three rounds of screening to create finalists from which Honors and Honorable Mention letters were identified and awarded.
Five students from Monomoy Regional High School attained recognition, placing them in the top three, four and ten percent of entries, statewide. The award of Honorable Mention went to Jeffrey Hauck for his letter to S.E. Hinton, about The Outsiders. He will be invited to a virtual ceremony streamed from the State House next month.
Samantha Goode who wrote to Tamara Stone, for Every Last Word was a finalist and Hope Jorgenson, Max Weinberg, and Chloe Zaloom were semi-finalists. Their respective letters were to Maya Angelou (“Still I Rise”); Ginger Garrett (The Last Monster) and Katherine Paterson (The Bridge to Terabithia)
Congratulations to all for your achievements!

Scholar Athletes of the Month: MARCH
Aliza Pillsbury
Aliza Pillsbury is the Captain of the Cheerleading team and is our main flyer. She is an outstanding cheerleader and performer. This year we had new young ladies join our team who have never cheered before. With her leadership skills she was able to assist with teaching them cheers, stunting and halftime routine. Aliza also is her Class Secretary and involved in NHS and the global studies program. Aliza holds a 4.5 GPA. She will be going to Northeastern University with a political science and economics major and she plans on pursuing a career in Washington DC. -Coach Robbin Kelley
Asa Kline
Asa Kline has been a welcomed addition to the football team this year. Asa has shown dedication and willingness to learn the game of football in his first year. He puts in the extra time needed to excel both on the field and in the classroom. Asa has brought with him a great amount of intensity and physicality as well as leadership and a great example to the younger players on the team. Asa's work ethic is evident in his commitment to sports, academics, and his work at the middle school as a physical education intern. - Coach Larry Souza
Football Game Recap
Monomoy Football has a very athletic team this year. We have a large group of seniors. The past few games have been a learning curve. We continue to work on and learn from our mistakes. We train hard for the next game. We will be facing Martha’s Vineyard again - looking to bounce back. I am confident that we will finish the rest of the season strong and with pride. -Tyler Potter
