Message from the desk of Van Lewsader
Dear VCMS Families,
Our VCMS Viper Success is attributed to four attributes. First, it is you, the parents. Our VCMS staff is fortunate and grateful for your vested interest in your child’s education. You are aware of your child’s class content. When asking your child what they did today, you do not settle for the typical middle schooler answer of “nothing.” You delve deeper. You ask specifically about what occurred in math class today? Tell me about scientific notation and exponents. Show me how you solve a two-step Algebraic problem. You ask what are your reading in reading class? You have your child show you what is being posted on itslearning.
Secondly, our VCMS Viper Success is attributed to your child. Your child comes to school ready to learn- motivated and determined to do their best. Assignments are completed. Questions are being asked. Students are learning from their mistakes and working through academic challenges. Students are exploring various ways to study- alone or with a partner, reviewing notes or reworking assignments or quiz problems. Beyond being quality students, our students are simply wonderful young adults. Our students show kindness and care to their friends and their classmates. Students continue to model our PBIS 4-R mantra: Responsible, Respectful, Ready to Succeed, and Reflective.
Thirdly, our teachers are a key attribute to our VCMS Viper Success. Our teachers are a blend of content experts and masterful lesson designers with tons of compassion for their students. Our teachers collaborate with their content departments and grade levels. Teachers invest their own personal time to enrich the learning experiences or research new materials, which often takes place later in the evenings, over the weekend, and even during our breaks (fall break, holiday breaks, and summer).
Finally, community is our fourth and final attribute that plays into our VCMS Viper Success. Community includes our school athletics and clubs as well as school-wide activities, and these community opportunities enhance our school pride. Our football team (60 players and 14 cheerleaders) made the playoffs. Our cross-country team (46 runners) placed 5th and 7th out of 18 schools at the Unicoi State Park competition and is competing at the state meet in Cochran. Our robotics club has 4 teams. One of the robotic teams placed 1st overall at a recent competition and has qualified for state. Another team won the Judge’s Award at that same competition. Former students are returning to VCMS and assisting our robotic members at their practices. Our debate team (60 members) had a recent competition. Our choirs (200 members) had a recent concert. The Clubhouse meets regularly. The Drama club meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school and is preparing for its performance. Viper Academy, an after-school help session, has begun. Like the robotics team, it is good to see 6-10 former VCMS students return to be tutors at Viper Academy, which takes place on Tuesdays. Our first quarterly PBIS Celebration is coming soon. We hope you can join us for our PTO Fall Festival on October 29th An All A’s Celebration is being planned after the semester ends. VCMS Viper Success is alive and well. It is a team effort, and together we will continue this tradition of excellence.

Enjoyable read from one of my favorite locations, a small village in England. Main character, June Jones emerges from her shell to fight for her beloved local library, and through the efforts and support of an eclectic group of library patrons, she discovers life-changing friendships along the way. June is forced to emerge from her reclusive life to save the library that holds the dearest memories of her mother.

I watched the Ken Burns documentary on Muhammad Ali and realized that I wanted to know more about Malcolm X and this book has been very enlightening. It is an objective, balanced account that shows the complexity of his personality and how his world view changed over time in response to events.

Local author, Joshilyn Jackson, has a way with words - I truly enjoy the way she weaves words to evoke image and feeling.
Amy Whey escaped the traumatic events of her teenage years to a routine life of marriage and motherhood in suburbia. An unexpected visitor to her book club kicks off a series of events that force Amy into a game of cat and mouse she is determined to win, even as she risks losing the home she has created.
