Special Programs Department
Special Programs Department:
Our Special Programs office is designed to support students that need extra support, from ESE, IEP, 504, ESL/Multilingual, EP, Gifted, and MTSS.
Mrs. Trujillo oversees the department and is the one to go to for ESL/Multilingual services and Gifted services.
Mrs. Pigne deals with the ESE side with the IEPs and 504s.
Mrs. Yesenko is the MTSS Coach.
For the Multilingual office, The ACCESS testing is wrapping up for our kindergarteners. Anyone that marked another language on their Home Language Survey must be tested with the ACCESS test. We will determine which kids need a little extra support with language in their classroom and will provide that during the year. This is a push in service, where we go to the rooms and support the students and teacher. They do not have to go to a different classroom. The letters for first graders that were in the Multilingual Program last year went home and state if the student needs to keep receiving services or if they are ready to exit from the program. The letters for the other grades will go home within the next couple of weeks.
For anything related to IEPs and 504s, Mrs. Pigne and her team are working hard on seeing students and making sure their needs are being met.
For MTSS, Mrs. Yesenko has sent home all the letters for students that need to be in Tier 2 and 3 of MTSS. That means they have a smaller group and work with a teacher throughout the week to help with their reading skills, in addition to their reading class. It is very important to all of us in our department that students receive the support they need to be successful this year and in life.
We do have a Remind account to send out messages. It is @oscssppop. Members of our team may have their own Remind accounts set up, but that is the one that will go to everyone that would like updates about the entire program. This is a good way to message us since emails tend to be buried. If there are legal items or documents, email is still the best way to send those items.
Odyssey of the Mind:
Odyssey of the Mind is a 3-8 competition team. They meet on Mondays with McGlothlin. This team is designed to ignite ingenuity with exhilarating challenges where teams of young minds from diverse backgrounds collaborate to creatively solve complex problems, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and innovation. From engineering to theater, it's a celebration of unbridled imagination, proving that when originality knows no bounds, the possibilities are limitless.
SECME K-8 Competition Team:
The SECME competition is a national award winning team. The K-2 team meets on Mondays with Ruddock; the 3-5 team meets on Thursdays with Burstein, and the 6-8 team will be supporting the K-5 teams for the next few months. We look forward to competing at SECME, Energy Whiz, and Curtis Science Challenge.

Dismissal Updates
WHAT IS DELAYED DISMISSAL? 30/30 RULE?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that is nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Osceola Science Charter follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the regatta bay exit door.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the regatta bay door during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the door to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.

FDOE Water Safety
Swimming is a lot of fun, but drowning is a real danger. Even kids who know how to swim can drown. Water safety education courses and swimming lessons can save lives.
See the link below for resources and information on water safety education courses and swimming lessons in your neighborhood.
Please click for the "Every Child a Swimmer” website which offers low to no cost scholarships for qualified children
THE ABCS OF SWIMMING SAFETY
A is for ADULT SUPERVISION
Near water, all children should be supervised by a designated, sober adult. Teens or older children should never be the only ones responsible for the safety of younger children around pools or other bodies of water. Supervising adults should be able to pull children from the water in the event of an emergency, and should be able to hail a lifeguard or call 911 if needed.
B is for BARRIERS
Door locks, pool fence gates, and audible pool alarms can be annoyances to unlock and replace each time you want to swim in your backyard pool, but they are there for your safety. Children should be taught to respect these barriers, and the pool area should be secured each time you finish swimming.
C is for CLASSES
With so many opportunities to swim in Central Florida, classes on swim instruction are almost a must for everyone, no matter your age. Classes are available through the following:
- Makinson Aquatic Center, 2204 Denn John Ln, Kissimmee, FL 34744 (Temporarily closed)
- Chris Lyle Aquatic Center, 2991 17th St, St Cloud, FL 34769
- Mary Jane Arrington Gym & Aquatic Center, 625 Country Club Dr, Poinciana, FL 34758
- Various YMCA locations
- Privately through groups or companies.
If the cost of enrolling children in swim lessons is not affordable, local funding opportunities through 501(3)(c) nonprofits such as the Team Kareem Foundation exist. You can apply for a swim scholarship by using this link.
For adults, First Aid and CPR certification classes are recommended. These can be taken through the American Red Cross. Unfortunately, Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS does not offer First Aid and CPR certified training at this time.

SEE THE IMPORTANT MESSAGE BELOW REGARDING FORTIFYFLORIDA:
Any student, educator, parent or member of the public can report school safety concerns directly to law enforcement and school administrators anonymously and easily through the FortifyFL app or www.getfortifyfl.com. The Florida Legislature directed this tool’s development in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
The app, which is available for download on Apple and Android mobile devices, is critical to ensuring all Florida schools are safe environments where students and educators can experience and share the joy of learning without fear.
We hope that you will become familiar with this tool and help us spread the word about it with your students and their families. Please note that the official app’s logo will look exactly as it does in the graphic above.
