Coffee talk with Mr. Guzman
It’s hard to believe that we’ve already arrived at Spring Break and that the majority of the school year is behind us. Spring Break is a great time to reenergize and refresh from the long winter. Shortly after our return from break, we will begin PARCC testing and it’s important that the students are prepared for testing not just mentally but also physically. Spring Break is a good time to catch up on sleep, unplug from devices and visit with friends and family.
I’ve discussed in the past about living in a digital world so unplugging devices may seem like a daunting task but even just unplugging for a few hours a day can help tremendously in refreshing your brain and your mindset. Over this break, it would be a good time for our students to catch up on their sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. Most teens do not get enough sleep — one study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights.” We have students who are consistently late due to oversleeping or hitting snooze on their alarms too many times in the morning and we do not want these tardies to affect their educational goals. The National Sleep Foundation says that lack of sleep can “Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, your homework or a date with a special person in your life.”
It’s also important for students to remain engaged and Spring Break affords the opportunity to have more time to focus on friends and family, travel, non-academic reading, games, activities and nature among other things. Remaining engaged and active is not only healthy but can help students to reduce the slide backwards that can happen when they step away from school for extended periods of time. Enjoy your break and we look forward to coming back and finishing the year strong.

Academic Highlights
"The case was a medical malpractice suit and we saw the direct examination of 2 witnesses by the plaintiff’s attorney and the cross examination by the defense. We also listened to several objections by the defense attorney along with the judgments given. The Honorable Judge Cresitello presided over the trial. He then spoke to the class about the case and about becoming an attorney, judge or other law related careers. Through this experience, students were able to have a visual representation of what they learned in class."
