From the Principal's Desk
In like a Lion and out like a Lamb-- that is the description for March. I am hoping we do not get the winter weather we have foretasted for this upcoming weekend. We are all ready for the kids to be outside and enjoying the fresh air.
With the change of the seasons and ending of quarters in the school year, along come a variety of traditional academic check ins, parent communications and planning for Spring.
This month we have our Parent Teacher Conferences on March 12th and 14th. Teachers have sent home communication to sign up for conference times and/or come in for student led conferences.
If you prefer a traditional conference to a student led, do please let your child's teacher know your desire. We always want to be sure our parents are able to meet face to face and have those all too important conversations needed with their child's teacher.
The times for the conferences will be in our "Calendar" section of this newsletter. Be sure to save the date and time to attend that is communicated from your child's teacher. We view this as our time to partner again with our parents.
We also sent home our Major Saver Cards for the yearly fundraiser this week. Students brought those home on Thursday. Collection dates are March 6th through March 13th.
Last but not least, we will be participating in the State Assessment (MAP Test) beginning April 8th and finishing up on May 10th. We will send home some tips and reminders in April with students. We want this to be approached as any other set of days for our students. We also want students to be encouraged and will have tables and supplies available for you to write them a note of encouragement at Parent Teacher Conferences.
Look for other resources those evenings for Parents- we have invited in some other outside resources and information tables to be set up in the GBE School Square. Do take time to stop by and take a look! You may find a resource you see as valuable.

Books are an avenue to learning about how to handle various life situations and provide a view on different experiences. Every time you read a book, it should develop a reaction in you or cause you to think differently. When reading a book together as a family, consider thinking about and discussing: What is the author trying to teach me? Different perspectives can create great conversation. Enjoy reading with your child and the conversation that can occur. As you read, think about how the character handles different situations. Think and talk with your child about what he/she would do in the same situation. If the character asked you for advice, what would you say or suggest they do? Did you learn something new you could try when situations or experiences like that arise? Each can be a great prompt to elicit conversation.
Feathers and Fools by Mem Fox is a book about two flocks of birds that begin to fear each other because of differences. Search for a video of the book read aloud or find a copy of this book, then use this book as a means to conversation. As you view or read the book, you can pause throughout and consider discussing: ● What would you do as the character? ● Why is the character acting that way? ● After the video is complete, think: What is the author trying to teach me? ● Consider how you reacted or how the story may have changed your perspective in some way
Outside Recess and Coats
Please do send your child in a coat on these last days of wintry weather. We want them to get outside and when the temps are lower it is required for them to have a coat. We do our best to get kids outside and will send them out when the temps outside are 15 degrees or warmer.
