Principal's Message:

Kia ora e te whaanau,

On Tuesday we took 17 students to Te Kohanga for River Zone Cross Country. The students had an awesome time representing the school. Many students will move on to Franklin as well. Congratulations to all those that competed.

Last week we sent 4 teams to Counties Mathex to compete in the Year 9 and 10 competition. One of our Year 9 teams did extremely well going into a tie breaker question for first place, they came second with only a couple of seconds in-between.

On Wednesday we had our teacher only day. Staff in the high school worked on the NCEA changes for literacy and numeracy. This is the first change we will see. Literacy and numeracy credits have been taken out of NCEA level 1 and will be sat at Year 10 instead. This change will start for us next year.

In the junior school they worked on their units on sustainability and physics.

The BOT met with SLT and developed the strategic plan for the next three years. The 3 focus areas will be learning, leadership, and community, with a focus on everyone reaching their full potential.

Uniss and Aims teams head off to tournament soon, we wish these students all the best with their tournaments.

Ngaa mihi,

Rebecca Bills

Message From The Board:

BOT update

I would like to acknowledge the incredible support, insights, and value that Tess Ritchie has provided the BOT as our Staff Rep over the previous couple of years. With her term completed, Tess has decided to focus on her role as an SLT member, and we now welcome Gayle Bovill as our newly elected Staff Rep. Most of you will know Gayle as our HOD of Mathematics and she brings with her a wealth of experience we can leverage as we work on our new strategic direction.

Matua Rima has decided after much consideration that it is time to pass on the batten as our Whanau Rep, and we are now asking for expressions of interest. If this role is of interest can you please reach out to myself or Rebecca for a discussion. Rima has been a huge support to the school and will be sorely missed at our meetings - his last BOT meeting will be in September.

The BOT met on 24 August to discuss the strategic direction (Charter) of OAS for the next few years and to review the feedback from the various surveys from our staff, students and community. While the strategic plan is still in draft, areas of focus were centred around:

  • Lifting and recognising academic excellence for our students and school.
  • Focusing on strengthening relationships between our community and school to the benefit of our students.
  • Recognising and driving positive leadership opportunities within the school for our students.

We also spent some time leveraging your feedback and MOE support materials to rescope and lift expectations around our student profiles at the various age groups within the school.

We will be in a position to share these pieces of work and invite feedback from the community after our September board meeting. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your voice around the many elements of our school.

As always I welcome any feedback.

Regards,

Owein Greaves

DAFFODIL DAY - Friday 26th August Non Uniform Day

This year, Onewhero Area School is proud to be supporting the Cancer Society this Daffodil Day. The Cancer Society provides free support and information, funds lifesaving cancer research and advocates health promotion initiatives to reduce the risk of cancer for future generations. The Cancer Society relies on the support from schools like ours to continue to provide free accommodation, nursing and psychology services for patients and their families.

We’ll be celebrating by holding a non-uniform “Yellow” day on Friday 26th August. We will also have a “Biggest Heart” coin trail event on this day and daffodil pins and stickers will be available for a donation.

Counties Manukau Mathex

Last week Pukekohe High School hosted the annual Counties Manukau Mathex. This event has not been able to go ahead the last two years because of COVID, so it was exciting for everyone involved to have students participate again in 2022.

This year after 30 minutes, one of our Year 9 teams was 1st equal with Strathallan on 70 points. The teams then went on to a tie breaker which was won by Strathallan. Well done to these four students, and to all those that participated.

Thanks

Gayle
