Who Should Attend:
Teachers of primary grades K-3, Curriculum Directors, STEM and STEAM Coordinators/Coaches
About the Workshop:
The Next Generation Science Standards require innovative, hands-on instruction in the early elementary grades, but commercial science kits are not necessarily the answer. Beginning with a curated set of NGSS lesson plans, we will develop the plans for kits by grade level using easily available materials and manipulatives. We will also develop age and grade appropriate science logbook writing prompts, which support NGSS units and document the various performance standards. Working together, participants will develop blueprints for their own kits, which they can tweak, differentiate, and clone for classroom use across the district.
Outcomes:
- Teachers will unpack and understand the NGSS at their grade levels, with emphasis on performance expectations.
- Teachers will plan science kits for classroom use, ready to assemble at their schools, in the physical sciences, life sciences, earth/space sciences, and engineering/technology.
- Teachers will draft science logbook writing prompts that support the NGSS and document outcomes.
- Teachers will brainstorm realistic strategies for differentiating K-3 NGSS science lesson plans.
